Job Summary

The English Language Learner STEM Teacher provides science and math instruction which aligns with the Anchorage School District’s Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS), Common Core State Standards, culturally responsive practices, and data-based decision making to guide instruction for increased student performance. The ELL teacher establishes a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop academic and linguistic skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a quality foundation for preparation for college and career readiness; and establish relationships with parents and other staff. This position reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position’s grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements

The following are required:

  1. Valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
  2. Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
  3. a posted degree in the content area of this position; or
  4. a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
  5. passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in content area of science and/or math.
  6. Strong oral and written communication.

The following are preferred:

  1. Familiarity with MTSS and differentiated instruction.
  2. Proven ability to apply science and/or math content knowledge and technology integration.
  3. Background in science and/or math.
  4. Familiarity with Alaska State Standards or Common Core State Standards.
  5. Familiarity with Positive Behavior Intervention Support.
  6. Familiarity with project-based experiential, and/or hands-on teaching and learning strategies.
  7. ESL, EFL, TESOL, bilingual, or similar endorsement, or passage of Praxis II ESOL, CELDT, or equivalent exam in combination with at least two years of relevant ESL teaching experience.

Essential Job Functions

Ongoing professional development will be provided to build capacity of selected applicants. The responsibilities listed below are representative of the essential functions of this position.

  1. Implements curricula and activities that provide opportunities to progress language development and academic standards including at least one double block of an Academic English STEM Course for Newcomer students and additional MTSS Tier 2 or 3 courses.
  2. Sets instructional goals directly aligned to the Alaska State Standards.
  3. Aligns instruction to the Alaska State Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools.
  4. Teaches students to work collaboratively to solve problems and to think logically and creatively.
  5. Provides highly engaging lessons utilizing nationally accepted best practices, differentiated instruction strategies, and hands/on and experiential project-based learning methods.
  6. Provides innovation and excellence in assignment preparations and implementation.
  7. Plans instruction that allows for independent/individual study, as well as, small group and large group collaborations.
  8. Uses appropriate questioning and discussion techniques during instruction.
  9. Provides students with ample practice time to master standards and language acquisition skills.
  10. Delivers STEM-oriented instruction through project-based learning methods.
  11. Makes thoughtful and reflective assessments of lesson effectiveness and adjusts lessons and instructional strategies accordingly.
  12. Creates a classroom of respect and rapport.
  13. Establishes a culture for learning in the classroom.
  14. Effectively manages classroom procedures.
  15. Effectively manages student behavior.
  16. Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness to enhance learning.
  17. Builds trust and positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
  18. Provides fair, equitable, and inclusive opportunities for all students.
  19. Demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy appropriate to student population.
  20. Maintains a strong, regular personal attendance record.
  21. Attends Academic English Professional Development Series (ASD offerings).
  22. Attends and actively participates in ongoing professional development offered by the ASD.

Physical /Mental Demands 

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment 

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings. 

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a satisfactory criminal background check. For certificated positions, this is in addition to the background check conducted through the certification process with the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development (DEED).
