MRes – Assessing mountain bike downhill performance following high-intensity exercise bouts (Project ID SAS0207)

nearmejobs.eu

Mountain biking, particularly in its enduro and cross-country disciplines, requires not only exceptional technical skills but also substantial physical conditioning to manage repeated high-intensity efforts (Impellizzeri & Marcora, 2007; Kirkwood et al., 2017). Previous studies have predominantly focused on the aerobic and anaerobic demands during competitive mountain biking events (Impellizzeri & Marcora, 2007; Kirkwood et al., 2017; Stapelfeldt et al., 2004). Evidence suggests that peak performance depends on the riders’ ability to repeat maximal efforts (Inoue et al., 2012) while optimising recovery and maintaining speed in technical downhill sections (Miller et al., 2017). This project aims to extend the knowledge base of mountain biking by exploring how sequential high-intensity exercise bouts affect downhill performance.

The proposed methodology involves conducting downhill time trials under two conditions: rested and immediately after repeated high-intensity exercise bouts. These field-based trials will be designed to mimic the physical demands of mountain bike races. The randomised, crossover design allows for direct evaluation of performance deterioration due to acute fatigue. This study will measure changes in downhill time trial performance, heart rate, and perceived exertion. Additionally, it will assess technical skill execution through the riders’ ability to minimise vibration, quantified by high-resolution accelerometers (Kirkwood et al., 2019; Miller et al., 2017). By examining these variables, this project aims to establish clearer connections between endurance fitness and downhill performance, providing insights that can enhance training protocols and competitive strategies for mountain bikers.

If you are looking to gain research experience, then an MRes may be the perfect choice. This concise programme serves as a bridge between undergraduate studies and PhD-level research, making it particularly suitable if you are transitioning into a new subject area, or exploring different career or academic research options. An MRes prepares you for roles that require research experience, including working within professional teams or in large organisations such as the NHS.

If you undertake this research project, you will work either full-time for 12 months or part-time for 20 months. The initial weeks will be dedicated to refining the project to align with your interests and aspirations. You will be part of the School of Applied Sciences, where you will receive comprehensive support throughout your studies, including training and events hosted both locally within the school and by our Research, Innovation, and Enterprise events team. Bespoke training will be provided to help you develop both your research and transferable skills.

Within the School of Applied Sciences, you will have access to a range of leading facilities and expertise, including the Mountain Bike Centre of Scotland. You will join a vibrant and growing community of postgraduate research students at the university, with access to workspace and social space in our recently refurbished researcher community suite.
