TITLE: Multilingual Program Coordinator

LOCATION: Central Office and Training Center

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers. 

JOB GOAL:

The role of the Multilingual Program Coordinator (K-12) involves supporting the instructional process by overseeing the implementation of Dual Language and ESL programs. This includes providing information and acting as a resource for Dual Language/ESL teachers, administrators, and other staff. Additionally, the coordinator is responsible for developing instructional staff in Multilingual Education and Services to perform at high levels, as evidenced by practice and student achievement data. Additionally, the coordinator supports the implementation of the district’s instructional model and the achievement of the district’s success indicators.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrate master knowledge of content, pedagogy, and coaching.
  • Provide support, training, mentoring, and coaching to dual language teachers, related service providers, instructional aides, and administrators, including oversight of ESL and special programs.
  • Coach and support dual language implementation utilizing data (formative, summative, and standardized measures) that results in high academic achievement for all students. Support teachers in the areas of effective instructional practices, reflective thinking, and lesson design connected to data.
  • Use principles of adult learning and effective facilitation in the planning and implementation of professional development (in-service and classroom embedded), with a focus on ESL needs.
  • Design and deliver standards-based professional development (Building and District in-service, embedded, and Professional Learning Communities) in collaboration with appropriate school staff and the Director of Multilingual Education and Services, incorporating strategies for ESL programs.
  • Understand and deploy best practices in the curriculum management process in collaboration with the curriculum department, ensuring alignment with ESL requirements.
  • Demonstrate high levels of proficiency in leadership behaviors and professional deportment, including sensitivity to the needs of ESL and special program students and staff.
  • Collaborate with the human resources department and building administration in the recruitment, selection, and retention of dual language teachers, with consideration for ESL program expertise.
  • Ability to work a full day in the location or locations assigned, overseeing ESL activities as needed.
  • Physical and emotional ability to perform required work and move about as needed in the fast-paced, highly intensive school environment, including addressing the needs of ESL program students and staff.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance while overseeing ESL program activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit, with particular attention to ESL program needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-5 years of effective teaching experience preferred as evident by favorable references, portfolio, and evaluations.
  • Experience as an instructional coach as evidenced by student achievement data and other impact data included in a professional portfolio.
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field (or plan of study on file and active progression to complete degree program) in an agreed upon timeframe.
  • Maintains Kansas Teaching License in appropriate content area and level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more content areas.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Second Language Acquisition, dual language teaching (Spanish preferred)
  • Demonstrated effective coaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, and implement effective instruction resulting in students meeting or exceeding standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

COMMUNICATION:

Maintains communication with teachers, other school personnel to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Maintains confidentiality regarding educational records.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

ORGANIZATION:

Maintains a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related work as required.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days

SALARY: Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule 

FLSA: EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: Director of Multilinguial Education & Services

EVALUATION: Performance with be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education Policy
