Job Overview

The Newcomer Student Support Coordinator T3 is responsible for ensuring the academic success and overall well-being of emergent bilingual students, particularly immigrant students. This role involves creating scalable systems, fostering student engagement, and bridging the gap between families, students, and the U.S. school system. The coordinator collaborates with campus and district personnel, analyzes data and develops strategies to support the academic and socio-emotional needs of this unique student population.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Parent, Family, and Community Engagement

  • Bridges the gap between families and the U.S. School System, with a focus on immigrant families
  • Educates students and families on post graduation opportunities
  • Identifies family and student needs and connects them with relevant resources
  • Establishes partnerships with local community organizations, businesses, and government agencies to provide additional resources and support for immigrant families
  • Collaborates with community organizations to support immigrant families
  • Organizes community events, workshops, and information sessions
  • Provides resources and guidance to families on navigating the U.S. education system

Instructional & Post Secondary Leadership

  • Develop mentorship programs that pair immigrant students with supportive mentors (teachers, community members, or older students)
  • Coordinate events such as college visits, career fairs, and workshops to expose immigrant students to post secondary education and career opportunities
  • Assists in the creation of systems to support students in the navigation of college application, financial aid and scholarship processes

Responsive Services

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of mentorship initiatives
  • Collaborate with campus personnel to ensure accurate transcript and appropriate student placement
  • Support students and parents in understanding graduation requirements
  • Collaborate with campus personnel to create individualized graduation plans specific to the needs of emergent bilingual students with a focus on immigrant students
  • Work closely with school counselors to ensure that immigrant students receive appropriate academic and emotional support
  • Assist in developing personalized education plans
  • Coordinate services such as counseling tutoring and mental health support

Program Management

  • Assist in the process of recruiting, screening, interviewing, and hiring of assigned staff
  • Create and implements opportunities for student engagement and leadership development
  • Evaluate state and local data to identify areas for growth related to students success
  • Design, implement, and monitor system aligned to the needs identified in the data
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to create scalable systems that enhance graduation rates for emergent bilingual students
  • Advocate for policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion for immigrant students
  • Collaborate with district-level personnel to influence policies related to language support curriculum and graduate requirements

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assist in the process of recruiting, screening, interviewing and hiring of assigned staff
  • Initiate personnel actions including documentation and termination under the guidance of HR
  • Address complaints and resolve problem in a timely manner

Qualifications

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Valid Texas ESL Certification or Texas Bilingual Certification
  • Valid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment
  • Valid Texas Mid-Management or Principal Certification preferred
  • Texas School Counselor Certification or Eligible for Texas Certification preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a Bilingual or ESL classroom teacher
  • Minimum of 3 years secondary teaching experience
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in program leadership at the campus or district level
  • Demonstrated knowledge of second language acquisition and effective instructional practice to support emergent bilingual students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices related to the implementation of district initiatives
  • Demonstrated knowledge in curriculum, instruction, and assessment development
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skill both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrates knowledge of experience working with immigrant students and families
  • Demonstrates knowledge of familiarity with graduation requirements and academic planning

The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

  • This position is grant funded through Title 3. This position may be discontinued if funds are no longer available.
