Cancer Biology and Stem Cell Biology
Two NIH-funded postdoc fellow/research scientist positions are immediately available to study Cancer Biology and Stem Cell Biology in the laboratory of Dr. Lu Le, Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Our lab investigates how genetic and microenvironmental factors interplay to regulate tumorigenesis. Our research focuses on identification of tumor cell of origin and elucidating the role of tumor microenvironment in cancer development. We dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis from a developmental perspective using Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a common tumor predisposition human genetic disorder, as a model. While working on neurofibromatosis, our research group serendipitously uncovered the identity of follicular epithelial stem cells that directly give rise to hair and skin, and mechanisms that cause hair to turn gray – findings that led to our second focus to identify possible treatments for balding and hair graying associated with aging.
Our laboratory offers a rich experimental environment that encompasses both basic and translational research. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree and should possess good communication skills.

The Le Lab at UVA School of Medicine is composed of a core group of talented scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and students. Our work bridges the fields of Cancer Biology, Developmental Biology, and Stem Cell Biology and focuses on neural-crest derived tissue development, regeneration, and tumorigenesis, in particular, the biology of neurofibromatosis, a group of genetic disorders that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. The broad research goals of the Le Lab are to: 1) decipher mechanisms that initiate and drive human cancer, 2) generate robust in vivo and in vitro models to delineate tumor progression, and 3) develop novel therapeutic targets for human cancers. A related goal is to translate our basic scientific discoveries in the laboratory into human clinical trials.
