We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider for Duke Pediatric Nephrology to care for pediatric nephrology patients including teaching hospitalized patients on dialysis.

The APP will augment a physician’s ability to provide medical services to patients in the clinic and hospital settings. The APP will work in collaboration with physicians and advanced practice providers providing direct patient care services, performing consultations, collecting and documenting data, assisting in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and ordering and scheduling laboratory studies.

Job Hours

Monday through Friday with hours flexible to meet the needs of the clinic and hospitlaized dialsis patients.

Job Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist physician in diagnosing medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care; record the normal and abnormal data for review by the physician.
• Obtain patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record data in the patient’s record; write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtain psychosocial history relevant to patient care; assume responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.
• Order and schedule laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures, and services such as renal transplant recipient evaluations, changes in immunosuppression, renal biopsies, inpatient and outpatient dialysis, and home health care; Explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patients and family as indicated.
• Carry out daily care and continuity for Pediatric Nephrology patients. Monitor progress of patients, report progress to supervising physician, and maintain record of each patient’s progress, consulting with supervising physician when patient’s progress does not meet anticipated and/or predetermined criteria.
• Coordinate the activities of the multidisciplinary Pediatric Nephrology team to ensure optimal patient care services, including inpatient and outpatient dialysis, renal transplantation, renal biopsies, and chronic renal failure
• Utilize medical decision making to create an individualized patient plan of care.
• Respond to EPIC Maestro Care and telephone messages in a timely fashion.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education 

• Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master’s degree in Nursing.
• Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.

Certification 

• BLS required.

License 

• Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.
• Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Experience 

1+ years of work experience as a Pediatric or Adult Nephrology Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant and/or RN strongly preferred.
