Org. Setting and Reporting
The Department of Operational Support (DOwas established to provide endtoend operational support, advisory services and other solutions to operating entities across the Secretariat, including departments, offices away from headquarters, peace operations, and regional commissions. This position is located in the Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOS, Office of Support Operations (OS, Department of Operational Support (DO. The Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health provides expert healthcare management, occupational safety and health, and public health services to all UN Secretariat entities (field missions, Offices Away from Headquarters and Economic Commission, the New Yorkbased agencies, funds and programmes, as well as strategic leadership of wholeofsystem medical issues through the UN Medical Directors Network. In addition, the Division provides staff counselling services to NewYorkbased staff of the Secretariat. This position is located in United Nations Headquarters in New York. The incumbent reports to the Head Nurse in Secretariat Operations Support Section, Medical Services Division, Office of Human Resources Management, Department of Management. The positions are for Head NurseOccupational Health Specialist.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: Provide occupational health support to staff by: • Performing clinical duties including walk in clinical care, emergency response and health promotion campaigns following a preestablished program. • Performing employment and periodical medical clearances in line with UN policies. • Performing point of care diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, laboratory (blood and urin, and other tests as required. • Providing travel medical clearances, ensuring preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccines, instructions on malaria prophylaxis, prevention, and other travelrelated conditions. • Providing, reviewing and certifying sick leave within delegated authority, and advising on returntowork programs and reasonable accommodation requests. Undertake health surveillance to detect preventable workplace hazards: • Reviewing active clinical cases and incident reports to identify patterns of illness and injury. • Reviewing completed compensation and disability claims data to identify patterns of injury and illness. • Collaborating in the development, dissemination and collection of surveys and other tools to identify areas of health risk in specific workplaces. • Undertaking individual ergonomic evaluations in office and other locations to identify at risk workers. Undertake surveillance and risk assessments of the working environment: • Performing task specific Job Hazard Analysis and location specific Workplace Risk Assessments. • Investigating occupational accidents, exposures and nearmisses using accepted UN risk methodologies. • Recording and communicating the incident reporting, risk assessment and risk management process using the UN’s EarthMed incident reporting system. • Developing mitigation strategies for staff and management. Provide occupational health and safety training and capacity development by: • Delivering selected occupational health and safety training. • Improve the understanding and awareness amongst staff of their role and responsibilities in contributing to a safe workplace and in complying with health and safety policy. • Contribute to the Emergency planning and preparedness with a specific focus on responders’ safety and health. General: • In the absence of the direct supervisor, oversees the daily operations of the Occupational Health Clinic. • Performs other related duties as required

Education
Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent degrein clinical nursing is required. A firstlevel degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalenin the specified fields of studies with two additional years of qualifying experience in clinical practice/Occupational Health may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Internationally recognized qualifications in occupational safety are desirable. Internationally recognized qualifications in occupational health are required.
JobSpecific Qualification
Registered Nurse Certification is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in nursing is required. Experience in occupational health is required. Experience in occupational safety is desirable. Experience in international health is desirable. Experience in the development and management of health programmes is desirable. Experience in working in hardship or low resource areas is desirable
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competencybased interview.

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year. The posts are financed by the Support Account for Peacekeeping Operations. The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.
