The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston is recruiting for a non-tenure track Open Rank Clinical Faculty – Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning Innovation.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Faculty Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning Innovation plays a pivotal role in advancing the educational mission of the medical school by fostering a culture of teaching excellence and supporting faculty members in their professional growth as educators. This position focuses on introducing, supporting, and monitoring effective and innovative pedagogical practices, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards, and enhancing the overall quality of teaching and learning experiences at the college of medicine.

Responsibilities:

  1. Pedagogical Leadership: Lead the development and implementation of innovative pedagogical strategies, including active and applied learning modalities and use of instructional technologies to enhance the educational experience of medical students, promote learner-centered instruction, and enhance learning outcomes.
  2. Teaching Excellence: Provide guidance, training, and resources to faculty members to promote excellence in teaching practices, including curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment methods.
  3. Assessment and Evaluation: Develop and implement effective assessment and evaluation strategies to determine professional development needs, changes in teaching and learning skills, and the impact of teaching and learning activities on student outcomes. Analyze data to identify areas for improvement and make recommendations for enhancing faculty and student education programs.
  4. Faculty Development: Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to faculty members to enhance their skills in teaching, learning, and scholarship of education. Offer guidance on integrating evidence-based practices into their teaching approaches.
  5. Scholarship of Education: Encourage and support faculty members in scholarly activities related to medical education, including research projects, publications, and presentations at conferences. Foster a culture of continuous improvement through the dissemination of best practices and dissemination of research findings.
  6. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with other academic and administrative units within the medical school, the University of Houston, and its clinical teaching partners to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and foster a supportive environment for faculty development. Communicate regularly with faculty members to solicit feedback, disseminate information, and address concerns related to teaching and learning.
  7. Accreditation Standards: Ensure that teaching and learning activities comply with contemporary accreditation standards; collaborate with relevant stakeholders to prepare for accreditation visits and address recommendations for improvement.
  8. Administrative Duties: Manage administrative tasks related to faculty development initiatives, including budget planning, grant writing, and program evaluation. Prepare reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders to demonstrate the impact of faculty development efforts on educational outcomes.

Salary and rank commensurate with academic achievements and experience.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (e.g., MD, PhD, EdD) in a relevant field.
  • Texas Medical License (unrestricted), if applicable.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in medical education, faculty development, or a related area.
  • Knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning, including active and applied learning modalities.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards for medical education (e.g., LCME, ACGME).
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to use data to inform decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience in mentoring and supporting faculty members in their professional development.
  • Track record of scholarly contributions to the field of medical education (preferred).
