Job Summary:

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Orthopaedic Extremity Surgery Physician Assistant.

As part of its ongoing efforts to provide exceptional health care services to the Borough of Brooklyn, SUNY Downstate Orthopaedic Surgery continues to support the expansion of operations of the Brooklyn upper limb service.

The past four-year term has seen the establishment of a viable, flourishing medical and surgical practice focusing on the entire upper extremity and microvascular surgery. The section has expanded with the hiring of new physicians and will continue to evolve to provide comprehensive upper extremity care across multiple hospitals in Brooklyn as the “Brooklyn Upper Limb Center.” As the initial several years of investment continue, our physicians have achieved operative volume that requires the support of a Physician Assistant to assist in complex inpatient care as well as continued outpatient expansion. Our physicians have also created a niche practice in orthoplastic limb salvage and reconstruction.

A Physician Assistant will work closely with the team to build sound operational footing, developing the foundation for further expansion into a regionally and nationally recognized upper limb and microsurgery program.

Upon hire, the Physician Assistant will function under the direction of two upper extremity orthopaedic surgeons in a fast-paced working environment. The individual is expected to work closely with orthopaedic surgery residents and will truly be an extension of the Brooklyn Upper Limb Center. The candidate should be self-motivated and have an interest in continuing education opportunities in addition to attending regular journal clubs, indication conferences and didactics for continued growth and development. The Physician Assistant should quickly gain the abilities necessary to become skilled and independent within their scope of practice and work toward the goal of running a parallel clinic.
