Job Summary:

A Paramedic in the Emergency Department is responsible for direct and indirect patient care while under the direction of a Registered Nurse and based on the Scope of Practice guideline.

Education:

Required:

Graduate of an accredited EMT-Paramedic training program. De-escalation training.

Preferred:

An Associate’s Degree is recommended, a Bachelor of Science Degree is preferred.

Experience:

Required:

A minimum of one year of continuous experience on an Advanced Life Support Ground Unit as an EMT-P. Experience must reflect general knowledge in pre-hospital medicine principles and practice skills.

Preferred:

One year emergency services experience in a hospital setting

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration

Required:

Current licensure to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Tennessee.

BLS completed prior to going to unit/department and maintained going forward.

ACLS required within 6 months and maintain ongoing thereafter – optional for Children’s Emergency Department.

PALS required within 6 months and maintain ongoing thereafter.

NIHSS required prior to completion of departmental orientation and maintain ongoing thereafter.

Critical Care Paramedic Certification within 12 months.

Preferred:

BTLS/PHTLS certified

Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic (NREMT-P)

Position Summary:

A Paramedic in the Emergency Department is responsible for direct and indirect patient care while under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The Paramedic is responsible for providing age specific care of initial complaint; the ongoing assessment, evaluation, and treatment of perceived, actual or potential, sudden or urgent, physical or psychosocial problems that are primarily episodic or acute. Resolution may require minimal care or life-support measures, patient and family education, appropriate referral, and knowledge of legal implications. Duties include but are not limited to the implementation of ACLS and BTLS protocols, medication administration, and performance of phlebotomy and EKG. Transport and supply stocking of the department; some clerical functions may be required.

The Paramedic must interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s policies and procedures. This is done through evaluation of direct supervisor by direct observation, in a skills lab, or discussed verbally or written. Competency can also be evaluated by a formal peer review process and/or by self assessment based on objective criteria that is reviewed and validated.
