Our Academic and Tutoring Services Department, in the Academic Support and Innovation Division, is seeking to hire a Part-Time English Language Learning/ESL Tutor.

  • This position will support a joint, grant-funded project between Lane Community College and the Eugene Public Library beginning in the summer of 2024 through June 2025.

Grant Statement:

Position is grant-funded through June of 2025 only. Employment after that would require re-application to work directly for LCC.

Working Schedule:

  • Part-Time; Variable work hours based on department needs
  • Schedule may vary with hours increasing during peak periods up to 40 hours per week, up to 1039 hours in a 12 month period

Position Purpose:

Provide one-on-one and group tutoring to English language learners attending community sessions at the Eugene Public Library and liaise with Academic and Tutoring Services staff to support expanded evening and weekend access to tutoring and conversation groups; provide mentorship and modeling for volunteer tutors and conversation group leaders.

Essential Functions:

  • Works independently and as part of a team.
  • Tutors students in specific ESL subject matter as recommended by program leads.
  • Trains volunteer community tutors.
  • Assists students to work through assigned materials or self instructional modules.
  • Observes and diagnoses areas that are causing the student problems in their course assignments, work, or personal correspondence or communication.
  • Models and practices written and spoken English with students at multiple levels of learning, from pre-literacy through fluency.
  • Discusses problem areas with students and provides explanation, clarification, reference materials or examples.
  • Reports needs and issues to the Academic and Tutoring team as needed.
  • Problem solves and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards (training provided).
  • Maintains confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:

This position works with the Academic and Tutoring Services Coordinator team and reports to the Director of Academic & Tutoring Services.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

  • Work Safely. Work may require sitting for two (2) to three (3) hour periods.
  • This position may work off-site at the Eugene Public Library for some evening and weekend hours and will otherwise be working from the Mary Spilde Downtown Center.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of best practices in English as a Second Language/English Language Learning tutoring
  • Skill in working with students at all levels of English fluency
  • Ability to provide positive reinforcement and encourage students and/or tutors
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to adhere to a regular schedule with evening and weekend hours
  • Clear oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to send clear written email and electronic messages to students, colleagues, and community members
  • Ability to work in person (not remotely) during all shifts
  • Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes
