  • This position requires development and review of curriculum, as well as, assessment of student learning.
  • The teaching assignment may require teaching lecture-discussion courses during day, evening, or on Saturday and/or in an on-line/distance education format.

The ideal candidate for this position is an equity-minded individual who understands the importance of creating opportunities in Communication Studies for students who have been historically underserved, particularly in the Latinx community. The ideal candidate demonstrates a commitment to student-centered teaching practices, effective cross campus collaboration, transparent decision-making, and purposeful service to the community and embraces the role of an educator who is continually learning anti-racist pedagogy and adapting to the needs of a diverse student population

ENGLISH DEPARTMENTGavilan College is seeking innovative, creative, and social justice-minded applicants for part-time faculty in the English Department. Our department offers primarily first-year reading and compositions courses, English 1A and 1C, along with literature classes in the English major and Creative Writing. Most of our courses have an in-person component, and instructors can work with the Writing Center to identify and utilize embedded tutors. Our faculty are heavily invested in student-centered teaching and are active participants in DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism) initiatives across campus as well as shared governance committees. We invite you to join us and welcome your leadership in curriculum revision, professional learning opportunities, English major events, our annual poetry contest, book clubs, brown bags, and more.

Essential Duties

  • Create and deliver theme-based reading, composition and/or literature courses with a DEIA framework in adherence to English course curriculum.
  • Maintain communication and connection with the English Department and the larger campus community.
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Counseling to facilitate student support services.
  • Assess and revise course materials as necessary to assure innovative, impactful, and equitable teaching and learning.
  • Adhere to department, division, and campus policies and procedures for faculty employees.
  • Perform other instructional duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of DEIAA (diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility) pedagogies and best practices in teaching English courses.
  • Dynamic, innovative, and student-centered approach to teaching that empowers and motivates students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Knowledge of or experience with impactful programmatic curriculum delivery such as learning communities, first-year experience, Puente, immersion programs, or service learning.
  • Knowledge of or experience with writing centers and other student support services.
  • Awareness of historic inequities in the discipline of English and ability to interrogate them in the classroom in order to promote change.
  • Experience teaching English in a college setting

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s in English, literature, or comparative literature, or composition OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach English from lenses that center marginalized perspectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and utilize culturally relevant course content, anti-racist pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging diverse students and students who are historically underserved.
