Pending budgetary approval and meeting enrollment minimums, the English Language Institute (ELI) and the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh are seeking applications for non-tenure-stream, Part-Time Instructors of English as an additional language (EAL) for Fall (August 15, 2024, to December 15, 2024) and/or Spring (January 1, 2025, to April 30, 2025). This position may be renewed on a term-by-term basis, depending on need, funding, and performance.

The position will involve responsibility for teaching in the ELI’s CEA-accredited Intensive English program (IEP) or the Department’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) credit classes, following strict curriculum guidelines, and supporting the mission of the University. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the instructor will be responsible for participating in Department and/or ELI faculty, program, and curriculum meetings and Department and ELI events as required. The instructor will participate in mandatory University, School, Department, and Department and/or ELI training. All part-time faculty assigned to teaching English support classes undergo classroom observations of their teaching, up to two per class per term. Please review the University of Pittsburgh Faculty Handbook (facultyhandbook.pitt.edu) for additional details on the role of faculty members, faculty development, and other topics.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field plus graduate-level coursework in TESOL
  • The equivalent of 1 year or more teaching experience in an IEP adult EAL, or EAP program

Highly Desirable:

  • Overseas teaching experience
  • Experience with remote and/or hybrid instruction
  • Post-MA teaching experience in an IEP or adult ESL or EAP program
  • Experience designing materials and assessments for listening, speaking, reading, writing, and/or grammar in IEP/EAP contexts
  • Experience designing materials and assessments for English for Specific Purposes in higher education contexts
  • Knowledge of and confidence in using technology in IEP/EAP contexts, including email, learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), presentation software, word processing software, spreadsheet software, cloud storage platforms, audio/video software, video conferencing platforms, and AI platforms.
