We are currently looking for a candidate to undertake a PhD in advanced robotics. Robots are no longer found just in factories conducting manufacturing tasks, they are increasingly being used in other sectors such as in the home, in extreme environments (e.g. space and nuclear), in waste handling, in healthcare, entertainment and many more applications areas. In these new sectors the requirements mean that traditional robot designs and methods are not suitable.
The PhD will develop new robot hardware/software/control systems. The exact focus of the PhD will be agreed with the applicant as part of the application process and will be selected to best match the student’s specific interests and background. Potential project areas include, but are not limited to: soft robotics; rehabilitation robotics; robot grippers and end effectors; dexterous manipulators; robots for extreme environments.
The successful applicants should have a first degree classified at 2:1 or 1st (or equivalent) in an engineering subject. An MSc in robotics or a closely related subject would be desirable but is not essential.
