PEDIATRIC ANESTHESIOLOGIST

POSITION OVERVIEW
Pediatric Anesthesiologists at Boston Medical Center ensure patient safety and well-being throughout surgery by providing individualized anesthetic plans, monitoring vital signs, and responding to critical situations. They collaborate with the surgical team and participate in quality improvement initiatives while staying current on the latest advancements in anesthesia. Pediatric anesthesiologists report to the director of pediatric anesthesia who in turn reports to the Chair.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct thorough assessments and create individualized anesthetic plans for children of all ages and medical backgrounds.
- Deliver various anesthetic techniques (general, regional, local) for a wide range of surgeries, including complex and high-risk procedures.
- Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs and physiological functions during surgery to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Respond effectively to critical situations and manage potential complications that may arise during surgery.
- Work closely with surgeons, surgical staff, and other healthcare professionals to deliver optimal patient care.
- Actively participate in initiatives to improve the quality of care within the Anesthesia Department.
- Stay current on the latest advancements in pediatric anesthesia through ongoing learning and professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school or osteopathic medical school
- Board certification in Anesthesiology or in the process of board certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in advanced airway management techniques.
- Ability to prioritize effectively and work well under pressure.
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A deep understanding and concern for the emotional well-being of children undergoing surgery and their families.
- The ability to effectively explain complex medical procedures to children and their families in an age-appropriate and calming manner.
- A calm and flexible demeanor to manage anxious children and unexpected situations during surgery.
- The ability to work long hours, maintain concentration in high-pressure situations, and respond quickly to critical events.
- The ability to work effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care.
- A strong desire to stay current on the latest advancements in pediatric anesthesia through continuing education.
- The ability to assess complex situations, identify potential problems, and make sound clinical decisions under pressure.
- The ability to manage one’s own emotions and read the emotions of others, especially children and their families.
- The ability to cope with challenging situations and maintain a positive attitude despite pressure.
