PhD in Chemistry – Developing innovative organofluorine chemistry
Dr Matthew Tredwell is looking for a PhD student to develop innovative organofluorine chemistry.
Research in the Tredwell group focusses on the development of novel methods for the selective introduction of fluorine and fluorinated group into small molecules. A major theme is the translation of these methods to fluorine-18 radiochemistry to produce diagnostic PET imaging agents for clinical use. For an overview of research in the Tredwell group see (https://profiles.cardiff.ac.uk/staff/tredwellm).
The importance of organofluorine chemistry is highlighted by its presence in 20% of marketed pharmaceuticals and 50% of agrochemicals. The cyclotron-produced positron emitting radionuclide fluorine-18 is ideally suited to applications in medical imaging and the commonly used radionuclide in PET imaging studies. Methods that allow for the selective and efficient synthesis of fluorinated compounds have the potential to have a major impact in these fields. A highly motivated student undertaking this PhD would gain valuable experience in organic synthesis, radiochemistry, automation and radiotracer development/translation throughout the project.
Recent publications from the group in this area include: Nature, 2022, 66, 102; EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry 2022, 7, 5; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2019, 58, 472; Angew. Chem. Int. 2017, 56, 11981.
