This project aims to provide understanding of deactivation mechanisms in novel ammonia synthesis catalysts (produced by industrial partner, We Are Nium). We Are Nium Clean Ammonia on Demand nearmejobs.eu We Are Nium synthesise nanoscale catalysts via physical deposition at scale, and the study of deactivation plays a key role in the development.
The student will be trained to use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to image atomic-scale changes in the structure of nanoparticle catalysts. In-situ electron microscopy will be applied to image changes in the nanocatalysts, providing a clear understanding of deactivation mechanisms to develop catalysts resistant to deactivation.
The student will be trained in the use and data analysis of a number of other surface analysis techniques, including BET and TPD. XPS will play a critical role in understanding the oxidation state of metals and changes in bonding during reaction. The student will be trained in the use of Python for data analysis.
We Are Nium will provide the student with training on physical deposition and catalytic testing during a 3 month placement with the company. The experience of academic and industrial research will give the student a unique skill set to provide an excellent basis for a career in any setting.
