Description
Description
Opportunity:
- Be part of thriving international research scene that investigates Deep Brain Stimulation at Charité, Berlin
- personal supervision in leading research group (https://sfb-retune.de/ ) investigating neuromodulation in movement disorders
- active PhD network with peer-to-peer teaching und hands-on seminars
Project summary:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common movement disorder that has been associated with excessive oscillatory and neuronal synchronization of basal ganglia circuits. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) disrupts this pathological synchronization, but neuronal and synaptic circuit underpinnings of this intervention are of ongoing debate. This project aims to promote direct translation of findings from human single cell recordings acquired during DBS surgery. Thus, it aims to pave the way for tailored neuronal circuit interventions delivered by DBS.
Responsibilities of PhD candidate within the project:
- Acquisition of neuronal activity data and performing behavioral testing of Parkinson’s Disease patients during DBS implantation surgeries as part of a specialized team consisting of Neurologists, Neurosurgeons and Neuroscientists
- Methods developments/implementation, participation in further development of experimental design
- Analysis of electrophysiological data and development of innovative analysis pipelines for real time analysis
- Participation in the scientific network activity provided by https://sfb-retune.de/ including weekly labmeetings and talks by internationally renowned scientists
- Present findings at (inter-)national conferences and prepare scientific publications
PhD candidate profile:
- Driving interest in translational Neurophysiology and in the investigation of the mechanism of action of DBS
- Preferable candidates will have a strong background and Master’s degree in psychology, biomedical engineering, physics, neuroscience, electrophysiology, biology, computer science or related fields
- Knowledge of neurophysiology and neuroanatomy, data acquisition and analysis (Matlab/Python/R/Spike2), and signal processing or the willingness and capability to quickly acquire this knowledge are essential
