Your work assignments and workplace
A major opportunity for saving energy is to transition from cooling houses (≈ 3 kW) and vehicles, to cooling of individuals (≈ 0.1 kW) through active wearable coolers. The PhD student will work towards this goal by developing novel stretchable conductors and devices for wearable thermoelectric cooling. The main objectives are to develop: i) High-power stretchable conductors based on kirigami structures and stretchable conducting composites. ii) Methods for simulating and generating optimized device designs. iii) Fabrication processes for materials and devices, including laser ablation and printing. iv) Wearable cooling panels for integration in textiles. The PhD studies will include design and processing of materials and components, together with characterization of electrical, mechanical and thermal material properties and device performance.
The PhD student will work in the Soft Electronics group, headed by Senior Associate Prof. Klas Tybrandt, at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE). Within the Soft Electronics group we develop composite materials, design concepts and devices for soft and deformable electronic systems. Areas of special interest are stretchable (semi)conductors, wearables, energy harvesting/storage, and neural interface technologies. Many of our projects are based on national and international collaborations including a variety of competences. Read more at: www.liu.se/soft-electronics
At the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE) we explore electronic and optical properties of organic semiconductors, biomaterials from the forest, and hybrid organic materials. Our activities span the range from basic research to commercialization, the latter carried out in close collaboration with the institute RISE. LOE currently has ~140 researchers and research students divided into 11 groups, each led by a principal investigator. Read more at www.liu.se/loe
All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School (https://wise-materials.org/research/graduate-school/ ), an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.
