Summary

The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider to provide high quality outpatient surgical care, under the direction of a physician, at Baylor College of Medicine’s McNair Campus. Candidate will be expected to provide clinical excellence and scholarly enthusiasm. The provider will have direct patient care responsibilities. The selected candidate will be appointed as a Faculty Instructor and be eligible for full faculty benefits.

Primary responsibilities include outpatient management, with attending physician involvement, of the acute care surgery/trauma patients. Responsibilities also include clinic preparation and follow-up care for elective surgery practices of group physicians. Candidate will join a team of APPs and rotating attending surgeons along with a full complement of residents and a rotating fellow.

Job Duties

• Participate in new patient clinics with attendings: review chart prior to new patient presentation, obtain detailed history and perform physical exam, present details to attending and assist in formulating diagnosis and treatment plan (including ordering diagnostic testing, interpreting results of diagnostic testing, placing consult orders, scheduling surgeries, etc.).
• Diagnostic testing, including laboratory testing, CT imaging, ultrasound, MRI, x-ray
• Understand indication for various surgical procedures to address appropriate diagnoses, anticipate possible complications of surgical procedures
• Provide patient education on diagnosis and treatment plan (including details of surgical procedures, potential complications, anticipated recovery, postoperative restrictions).
• Participate in multidisciplinary communication with consulting services, nurses/MAs, home health agencies, social workers, etc., as appropriate.
• Provide follow-up care for new patients based on above diagnosis and treatment plan
• Communicate results of above diagnostic testing, answering MyChart messages/patient phone calls, ensuring appropriate clearances are obtained, ensuring surgeries are scheduled appropriately
• Assist attending surgeon in outpatient procedures as needed (infrequent)
• Prescribe appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments
• Formulate and carry out post-surgical treatment plans (in person and virtual visits): discussing pathology, wound checks, instruct on wound management, pain medication titration, etc.
• Answer MyChart messages and phone calls of postoperative patients
• Ensure timely and accurate documentation in EPIC electronic medical record system
• Provide direction and support to any students, residents, or MAs assigned to the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery Team
• Promote a positive work environment with a team-based approach through supportive and respectful interactions with peers, staff, learners, and faculty

Minimum Qualifications

Education Required:

• Physician Assistant Candidates: Master’s degree in physician assistant studies. Bachelor’s degree in physician assistant studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
• Nurse Practitioner Candidates: Master’s degree in nursing.

Certification/Licenses/Registration:

• Physician Assistant Candidates: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board.
• Nurse Practitioner Candidates: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP).

Experience Required: None required.

Specialty certification as required by department.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
