Position description

This position is located in the Special Political Mission “Panel of Experts on Libya”, functionally reporting to the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch (SCSOB) of the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), United Nations, New York. The incumbent will report directly to a Senior Political Affairs Officer in SCSOB.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they relate to the countries and thematic mandates on the agenda of the Security Council.
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
  • Monitors national and regional level political developments that could become a threat to international peace and security.
  • Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the Security Council.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and member states and/or Panels of Experts on coordination and policy matters.
  • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non-governmental organizations.
  • Selects, classifies and stores in computerized databases information relating to the Security Council, its subsidiary organs and Panels of Experts
  • Participates in missions of the Security Council and its subsidiary organs to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Participates in provision of secretariat services to the Security Council, its subsidiary bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
  • Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization’s purview.
  • Performs other related duties as required

Education

  • Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in Political Science, International Relations, International Economics, Law, Public Administration or a related field. A first level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in supporting, assessing and/or analyzing Security Council sanctions regimes is required. Experience in political analysis related to North Africa and/or the Middle East is desirable. Experience working in or in support of a special political mission of the United Nations Common System is desirable.

Languages
