Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific in shared structure of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the Department of Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO), at UN Headquarters in New York. The Political Affairs Officer reports to the Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) through the Senior Political Affairs Officer/Special Assistant.
Responsibilities
The Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Monitors the activities within the ASG’s area of responsibility in the Asia Pacific region and liaises, coordinates and follows up with the Directors, Deputy Directors and Political Affairs Officers on the planning and implementation of conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peacebuilding and conflict resolution strategies in the region. Liaises with Asia Pacific Divisions to ensure the Assistant Secretary-General’s (ASG) guidance is implemented. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events and trends relating to political issues in the Asia Pacific region and provides briefings on issues and recommendations to the ASG. • Plans and coordinates with the Asia Pacific Division (APD) to ensure qualitative and timely substantive support is provided to the ASG/USG, EOSG and other senior UN officials as appropriate; Coordinates the preparation of regular meetings between the ASG and Directors and follows up on the outcome of these meetings; coordinates and assists in the preparation and delivery of priorities relevant to APD in coordination/consultation with the Divisions under his supervision; coordinates with counterparts in the Secretariat and other UN entities on areas of responsibility and of interest to the UN. • Coordinates with and provides support to the Front Offices of the Under-Secretaries-General (as appropriate) and other Offices of ASGs within the peace and security pillar, and the Executive Office of the shared regional structure. • Tasks and reviews briefing notes and talking points for the Assistant Secretary-General. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience working on peace and security, or related issues, on Asia is required. Experience in writing documentation, country specific and regional analysis and recommendations for senior officials is required. Experience in administrative and budgetary processes of the UN or other international organization is required. Experience in organizing large multi-stakeholder meetings and/or events is desirable. Experience in backstopping UN field presences with respect to substantive political guidance, budgetary and other operational and personnel matters is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

• This position is temporarily available for an initial period of 3 months with the possibility of extension.
