Welcome to the UKE.
Main tasks
The microbiota comprises the collection of microorganisms inhabiting specific locations, such as the human intestine. It is shaped by environmental influences and nurtured by diet. Certain microbiota profiles are strongly associated with cancer and the outcomes of cancer therapies. But how do they impact the host?
We hypothesize that the microbiota influence the host by degrading dietary components to produce metabolites, which may act locally in the gut or reach distant cancer sites through circulation. Recently, we discovered that a specific microbiota-derived metabolite can modulate the response to chemotherapy in pancreatic cancer models (Tintelnot et al., Nature, 2023).
We are seeking a motivated and innovative candidate with a passion for science and the curiosity to think outside the box. Your goal will be to advance our understanding of microbiota-host interactions in the context of cancer. Your expertise will be key to uncovering the molecular mechanisms behind microbiota-mediated effects on cancer and therapy resistance.
This position is temporary for three years, with the possibility of extension.
