Postdoctoral Research Fellow – AI & Data Science
(f/m/d; E13 TV-L, 100%)
to work on cutting-edge and exciting AI & data science research topics that generate real added value for human and animal healthcare.
The initial fixed-term contract will start as soon as possible and have a duration of 2 years with possible extension.
About the project
In the next two years you will focus on research on anomaly detection for histopathology. The goal is to find any deviation from healthy tissue, such as pathologies, based on image data. The approach should learn the appearance of healthy tissue, be able to take advantage of certain known pathologies, but also detect completely new changes. Furthermore, it should be able to improve continuously getting different kind of human feedback from pathologists. Fast detection of anomalous tissue is important for early detection of toxic drug candidates. This can help to reduce time, costs, and the number of animal tests in drug discovery.
As a Postdoc, you will be hosted in the Machine Learning Group led by Prof. Matthias Hein and collaborate with Dr. Fabian Heinemann, Head Biomedical AI-lab / Drug Discovery Sciences of Boehringer Ingelheim.

- The ideal candidate is self-motivated, comfortable with both analytic and critical thinking, and has a strong computational and mathematical background.
- You should be familiar with modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
- Prior work on anomaly detection, out-of-distribution detection, continual learning as well as having experience with histopathological data is a plus.
Our offer
We offer you an exciting research position at a highly renowned university, in a welcoming and agile team, where you will have the possibility to conduct research with a high amount of autonomy, a collegial work atmosphere and ongoing career mentoring.
