Summary

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is expanding its research lab to encompass basic science, clinical research, translational science, and device development. Our lab is dedicated to investigating skin biology, skin conditions such as keloids and hypertrophic scars, burn physiology, and the regeneration of skin and soft tissues.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral scholar to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting ongoing research initiatives in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. This position will primarily involve laboratory work geared towards advancing these goals, including the utilization of cellular models, sequencing patient and animal samples, and analyzing therapeutic compounds. Additionally, the role will entail conducting small and large animal experiments under appropriate guidance to further basic science and therapeutic developments, with the ultimate objective of translating bench research into clinical applications.

Collaboration with plastic surgery faculty members is central to this position, encompassing all aspects of research from project development and securing IRB/IACUC approval to executing experiments, facilitating weekly meetings, and ensuring the smooth functioning of the laboratory. The fellow will also be expected to draft grant proposals under faculty guidance, fostering the development of independent research skills and fostering collaboration across various disciplines and faculties. This opportunity will enable the fellow to evolve into an independent researcher capable of making significant contributions to the field.

Required Education & Experience

  • PhD in a related field
  • Experience working with animals (rodents and swine)
  • Experience with cellular models, processing samples, sequencing, animal models, heart function and muscle physiology
  • Experience in wet lab techniques (histological and molecular analysis)
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects
  • Basic understanding of and proficiency with biostatistics
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Experience in biomedical engineering and/or with the design of medical devices isa plus
