JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The School of Engineering Design and Innovation within the College of Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time professional track (non-tenure-line) teaching faculty position.

The School offers courses at both University Park and World Campus. The School offers courses related to the following programs:

  • Engineering Design (EDSGN) Program: Courses within the program, particularly the cornerstone engineering design course, assist students in learning design processes, methods, and decision-making tools while engaged in team-based design projects. Effective use of communication skills and computer-aided analysis tools are an integral part of the cornerstone engineering design course.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ENTI) Minor: Courses are taught in support of the Technology-Based Entrepreneurship or the Social Entrepreneurship cluster and assist students in obtaining skills attributed to entrepreneurial behavior and innovative thinking.
  • Engineering Leadership Development (ELD) Program: Courses in this program provide students with the understanding of individual, team, and organizational leadership; business acumen, global competencies, and multicultural awareness; and innovation and management.
  • Law, Policy, and Engineering (LPE) Program: Courses aim to provide new cross-disciplinary perspectives and tools required to solve complex multidisciplinary problems and address societal changes in science and technology policy, legal and regulatory policy, complex systems design, and anticipating technology trends.
  • Doctor of Engineering in Engineering (D.Eng): This online program provides a deep understanding of advanced engineering and high-level leadership principles.
  • More information on the school’s programs may be found at www.sedi.psu.edu.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate is expected to teach up to five courses per year. While most of the teaching is likely to be of EDSGN 100 Cornerstone Engineering Design (required for most first-year engineering students), the opportunity may exist to utilize the successful candidate’s expertise in other design courses or programs of study within the school. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, undergraduate teaching, curricular development, curricular assessment, and committee assignments. Professional development is also an expected component of this role.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor or Associate Teaching Professor include a master’s degree or a Ph.D. in an engineering-related field by the start of the appointment and complementary teaching, industry, or other experience. The title of Professor of Practice should be reserved for persons who have accumulated a decade or more of high level and leadership experience in the private or public sectors outside the academy. Candidates will be considered for an academic rank commensurate with their education and experience in accordance with AC21.

Evidence of excellent teaching potential and enthusiasm for interacting with students is required. Applied experience and evidence of the ability to function in a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary team environment is a plus. This position requires excellent writing and oral communication skills.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a term appointment with the possibility of renewal. Rank and length of term are determined by education and qualifications. The anticipated start date is January 2025.

APPLICATION & HIRING INFORMATION

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Interested applicants should upload the following in one document: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least three professional references. Candidates should include a statement on teaching interests and experiences that have informed their teaching philosophy and how they could contribute to the efforts of the program(s) to which they will engage. This statement can be included in the cover letter or as a separate document.
