Program Director, English Language Arts

Reports to: Head of School

Location: Boston Latin School (BLS) is one of three exam schools in the Boston Public Schools, serving 2,400 scholars in grades 7-12. Description: Boston Latin School is seeking a visionary and dynamic individual to serve as Program Director for English Language Arts. We are looking for a highly motivated, exceptional, results oriented professional with experience in school administration, who is committed to high standards of achievement by both students and educators, and who has considerable expertise in supporting teachers with instruction of rigorous texts, college preparatory writing, and culturally and linguistically sustaining practices. Each BLS scholar is expected to graduate with reading, writing, research, and presenting skills, as well as civic engagement and social responsibility, that prepare them to lead in a global society. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise and evaluate 23 faculty members in the BLS English Department, who are responsible for teaching required English courses in Grades 7-12 as well as electives in the junior and senior year.
  2. Coordinate and oversee the implementation of horizontal and vertical alignment of curriculum as well as writing and research skills within the English department.
  3. Ensuring collective responsibility for the BLS Core Competencies across all content areas through collaboration with Program Directors in other disciplines.
  4. Continuous work to ensure literature reflects the contemporary classical mission, ensuring enabling texts and representation across all identities.
  5. Serve as a critical member of the school’s Academic Leadership Team responsible for steering instructional goals and professional development design in collaboration with the ILT.
  6. Use data to guide academic goals to assist the Head of School in the preparation of the Quality School Plan and on setting instructional goals.
  7. Serve as lead administrator for out-of-school time events including annual Spelling Bee, Prize Reading, and Poetry Out Loud competitions.
  8. Assist the Head of School in planning events including public declamation, prize night, welcome events for prospective students, volunteer and parent activities, and student support services.
  9. Engage the wider community to support school goals.
  10. Assume other related duties as requested by the Head of School.

Qualifications Required:

  1. Masters Degree in Education or related field.
  2. Three (3) years experience successful teaching experience
  3. Massachusetts license for Supervisor/Director, All Levels.
  4. Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators and parents.
  5. Ability to bring a team of individuals to consensus in service of a common mission and shared goals for students
  6. Experience with budget preparation and implementation.
  7. Experience designing and implementing race and equity professional development and serving as a resource for students and staff around these issues.
  8. Growth mindset and high degree of cultural competence.

Qualifications Preferred:

  1. Degree in English Language Arts
  2. Teaching and leadership experience in a 7-12 educational setting in an English related field.
  3. Experience as a school administrator.
  4. Experience in large, fast-paced school environments with significant extracurricular commitments, extremely high levels of email communication, and parent engagement with a diverse, multilingual population
  5. Knowledge of practices and policies supporting English Language Learners and experience working to ensure compliance as well as affirming school experiences for students at all ELD levels.
  6. Familiarity with Advanced Placement curriculum and expectations for the two College Board AP English courses offered at BLS.
  7. Comfort with disaggregating large data sets and presenting them for analysis to faculty and staff.
  8. Experience with development and implementation of master schedule and course assignments.
  9. Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools (BPS).
  10. BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS’ official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
