UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women Philippines office is implementing its Country Programme Strategy 2024 – 2025 derived from the newly signed United Nations Philippines Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2024 – 2028. The vision is to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and the full enjoyment of their human rights in the Philippines, aligned to the aspirations of the Philippine Development Plan and the UNSDCF. To accomplish this, we work with our partners across the Philippines to implement targeted programmes that support women, peace and security, women’s economic empowerment, women’s leadership and participation, ending violence against women, humanitarian/DRR and climate change issues.
Philippines remains to be the highest at-risk countries to disasters and climate change in the world. With socio-economic factors often determining the vulnerability of women and girls, they are disproportionally affected by disasters and climate change and gender-based violence when displaced or have lost the care of their partners and parents. Their high dependence on agriculture, compounded by the high sensitivity of the sector to climate change, particularly make Filipino women highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Furthermore, women, due to their gender roles, are responsible for food security and food production. The impacts of climate change on agriculture, water resources, health and other sectors, therefore, puts an enormous burden on women. Their lack of access and control over resources such as land, information, finances, also means that they face higher constraints in adapting to climate change. Closing the gender gap through climate informed investments and opportunities that remove these barriers provides pathways for women’s empowerment, economic development and societal resilience.
Building on UN Women Philippines’ experience in providing technical support on women’s economic empowerment, gender mainstreaming, support in generating of gender statistics, as well as gender responsive budgeting, there is demand for expanding knowledge and skills on gender and climate change.
With a regional programme to be implemented in the Philippines focused on increasing action on gender responsive climate change adaptation and mitigation, ensuring women’s representation as key environmental actors in climate and DRR decision-making and promoting as well as securing climate resilient livelihoods.
