Mission and objectives

Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialized Agency established in October 1945, with the mission to contribute to eradicating hunger and achieving food security for all. It has a comprehensive mandate from its Members to work globally on all aspects of food and agriculture (including forestry, livestock and natural resources’ management), food security and nutrition. FAO has an extensive knowledge base and has comparative advantage as a knowledge broker; it strengthens its convening power. Regional and decentralized offices provide the opportunity to capitalize on successful experiences, engage partners, stakeholders and end-users to tailor knowledge products and services specifically to the needs and capacities. FAO has 26 member countries in Asia and 18 member countries in the Pacific region. FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO RAP) is based in Bangkok, Thailand.

Context

The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) is responsible for leading FAO’s response to regional priorities for food security, agriculture and rural development through the identification, planning and implementation of FAO’s priority activities in the region. It ensures a multidisciplinary approach to programmes, identifies priority areas of action for the Organization in the region and, in collaboration with Divisions/Offices/Centers at headquarters, develops, promotes and oversees FAO’s strategic response to regional priorities. RAP also advises on the incorporation of regional priorities into the Organization’s Programme of Work and Budget and implements approved programmes and projects in the region, monitors the level of programme implementation and draws attention to problems and deficiencies. RAP develops and maintains relations with region-wide institutions including the Regional Economic Integration Organizations (REIOs). The Regional Office supports regional policy dialogue on food security, agriculture and rural development issues, facilitates the emergence of regional partnerships, and supports capacity development and resource mobilization for food security, agriculture and rural development in the region.
