This project is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering at the University of Southampton https://qte.ac.uk/). In addition to the research project outlined below, you will receive substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills.

This project aims to investigate the bioelectric heterogeneity of colorectal cancer, using quantum diamond sensing. We will utilize nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to image the spatial distribution of bioelectric fields within colorectal cancer cells from established cell lines. By correlating bioelectric signatures with cell types and ion channel profiles, we aim to advance the field of NV centers in diamond for biological sensing. Imaging will be performed using a custom-built wide-field microscope. Cells responses will be assessed using biological assays, and correlated with spatially resolved bioelectric data using machine learning algorithms. This project will involve a multidisciplinary collaboration between the departments of Electronics and Computer Science, Optoelectronics, and Cancer Sciences at the University of Southampton, as well as the Bioengineering Institute at Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon.
