Quantum imaging with quantum-squeezed light

nearmejobs.eu

Optical measurements and light-based sensing methods are limited by the quantum fluctuations in phase and amplitude of the light, also known as shot noise. It is possible to work around this limitation by using quantum light whose fluctuations on the phase or the amplitude have been reduced below the quantum noise limit (squeezed light). In our lab, we are able to produce quantum-squeezed light where quantum fluctuations are reduced independently at all points across the beam. This is akin to spatially ordering the photons in order to remove the “quantum roughness” of the beam of light. This unique capability means that we can use quantum effects to improve the imaging of hard-to-see objects. In this project, we seek to use spatial filtering and Fourier optics technique to manipulate the quantum state of the light, and create squeezing that would be suitable to image amplitude objects, phase objects, and anything in between.

Ultimately, this research will allow for the study of novel quantum and topological states of light existing at the interface between the temporal and the spatial dimensions. A possible application would be the production of squeezed light that would make the next generation of atom magnetometers more sensitive and capable of imaging small currents in the human brain.

This project is suitable for a student with a strong taste for quantum mechanics (and possibly quantum optics) and willing to stretch their experimental skills, particularly in optics and laser physics. This is a human-scale experiment where you will have ample opportunities to learn a wide range of topics, from advanced experimental optics to abstract information theory.

The School of Physics and Astronomy is an Institute of Physics Juno Champion since 2014 and holder of the Athena SWAN Silver Award. Both initiatives recognise the School’s commitment to promote diversity and equality, and to encourage better practice for all members of the community, whilst also working towards developing an equitable working culture in which all students and staff can achieve their full potential. We welcome applications from all qualified applicants, and encourage applications from traditionally under-represented groups in physics and astronomy.
