Research Associate position in Structural Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus invites applications for a full-time, Research Associate appointment in Structural Engineering. The initial appointment will be for up to two years with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and job performance. The anticipated start date is January 1st, 2026. The salary is $90,000 CAD per year.

This position strengthens the research functions in Structural and Earthquake Engineering. The Research Associate will be responsible for the following duties:

• Developing earthquake-resilient components and systems
• Planning and executing experiments on structural frames, members, and components
• Conducting thorough investigations utilizing finite element analysis
• Assessing seismic performance through macro modeling of structures
• Disseminating research findings through publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals
• Supervisory responsibility for multiple groups of researchers

Applicants must meet the requirements below.

• A Ph.D. in structural engineering or a closely related discipline.
• A minimum of ten (10) publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, including at least five (5) as first author.
• Proven experience in organizing, coordinating, and managing research projects, demonstrated by participation in at least three grant-funded research programs.
• A clear understanding of the academic research process, supported by both practical and academic experience.

Prof. Tony T.Y. Yang (yang@civil.ubc.ca) will provide high-level supervision to the candidate to ensure the quality and correctness of the work. The candidate will frequently interact with Prof. Tony T.Y. Yang through email or weekly meetings to report the progress of the project.
