Research Computing Scientist

University of Virginia

UVA Research Computing (RC) is seeking two Research Computing Scientists with data analytics experience to join its new Data Analytics Center (DAC).

RC strives to create innovative computational and data analysis solutions for researchers. We build and maintain the University’s high performance computing platforms while educating the next generation of researchers on the power of advanced computing. The new Data Analytics Center is providing domain expertise for researchers who are using advanced computational methods in their research.

RC is within UVA Information Technology Services (ITS) at UVA.  ITS is a phenomenal place to lead, grow, and deliver impact. It’s an organization that values results and teamwork. The team strives to create a welcoming, supportive workplace in an agile group where everyone feels empowered to be their authentic selves and share ideas. We embrace a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. ITS values work-life balance and provides flexible work location options where possible. Please see additional information about joining our team .

As a member of the RC team, you will further our organization’s mission by teaching research computing best practices, working directly with university faculty and researchers, and engaging with them to produce new computing solutions within their fields of research.  In addition to working with a variety of researchers, you will have opportunities to participate in interest group meetings on topics relevant to computational research and explore new computational techniques within your domain of expertise. Funding is available for a limited amount of travel for professional development.

As an ideal candidate, you have an outgoing personality with a passion for providing high-quality services, enjoy supporting and educating academic researchers, have some experience with academic computing, and are able to apply those skills to UVA’s research computing environment. We seek an energetic self-starter and quick learner who enjoys technical problem solving and working on multiple projects simultaneously, has strong communication skills, and is a team player.

These are hybrid roles, requiring an in-office presence every other week.

These positions have committed funding through June 2028, with the expectation of continued institutional support for the positions beyond that point.

  • Advise researchers on the use of existing, research domain-specific software, especially software available on UVA’s central computing systems.

  • Assist researchers by developing and applying novel domain-specific data analytic tools to support their academic research using central computing systems, including the University’s high-performance computing environment.

  • Support researchers in the identification of University resources for data acquisition, storage, management, and retention.

  • Help researchers with the staging and organization of data.

  • Develop educational materials and deliver workshops in domains of expertise.

  • Organize and attend outreach events to enhance the research computing community at UVA.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in engineering, mathematics, data analytics, natural or social science, digital humanities, or research experience in related area.

  • Two or more years of experience with at least one programming language such as Python, R, Matlab, C/C++, Fortran.

  • Experience with statistical methodologies for analyzing data.

  • Experience working in an academic research environment.

  • These roles may include engagement with the Social Sciences, Digital Arts and Humanities, and experience in these areas would be viewed favorably.

  • Familiarity with working in a Linux environment.

  • Experience with high-performance computing and basic shell scripting.

  • Experience with Large Language Models.

  • Teaching or user training experience in any computational research domain is a plus.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, data analytics, natural or social science, digital humanities, or a related area, and at least five years of experience with implementing data analytic techniques.

  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Data Acquisition and Management, Data Visualization, Text and Network Analysis, Bioinformatics, HPC GIS, Statistics, or Databases.

  • At least one year of computing or programming experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. US citizenship or permanent residency is required to work with RC’s high-security data environments.

Benefits Include: The choice between 3 different health plans; vision and dental insurance; life insurance; benefits savings accounts; starting with 22 days of paid time off a year in addition to 12 or more paid holidays; 8 weeks of paid parental leave; short term disability; up to $4,360 after your first year for combined use of tuition toward a degree-seeking program or up to $2,000 for professional development including classes, certification training and conferences; and more!
