The Opportunity
Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries seeks an innovative, collegial, and collaborative librarian to develop, advance, implement and support a range of services around scholarly output, research impact, and bibliometrics for the Toronto Metropolitan University community.
This position is part of the Collections Services (CS) Department and reports to the Dean of Libraries. The Librarian will work under the direction of the Associate Dean of Libraries for Scholarly, Research, and Creative (SRC) activities, and work collaboratively with subject liaison librarians, and with other key institutional stakeholders to plan, coordinate, and execute research impact strategies that align with TMU’s broader institutional goals. This work will contribute to increasing SRC excellence, intensity, and impact in alignment with institutional priorities (TMU’s Strategic Research Plan 2025-2030 and Academic Plan 2025-2030).
The Research Impact Librarian will provide guidance and support faculty and researchers in optimizing their research visibility and will develop and deliver training sessions on research impact and alternative metrics, and strategies for increasing research visibility while providing expertise in the use of citation databases to track and analyze research output. The librarian assists in evaluating bibliometrics data to communicate research impact within TMU’s strategic plans and research initiatives. The research impact portfolio would encompass (but not be limited to): bibliometrics, alt-metrics, sustainable development goals (SDGs), critical assessment and analysis, assessment of impact of open scholarship, community impact, etc.The librarian will also collaborate with programs, departments, and Faculties in the development and implementation of research impact strategies.
This role may involve liaison work which includes providing expertise in discipline-specific reference, research consultation, library instruction, collection development and collaborative support of graduate programs within the team of liaison librarians. Librarians actively contribute to providing research assistance through both in-person and virtual service points, and may occasionally be required to work non-standard hours, including weekends and evenings.
As a Career Librarian, the incumbent contributes to the Libraries and the University through active participation in the collegial management structure and committees, and engages in professional development and/or scholarly, research and creative activities. Furthermore, they will contribute to University priorities, including the development of Indigenous initiatives and supporting the responsibilities outlined in the 94 Calls to Action on Truth and Reconciliation.
The successful candidate must be a graduate of an accredited library/information school with a MLS/MLIS/MISt/MI degree or acceptable ALA recognized equivalent. In addition,the candidate must present evidence of the following skills and qualifications:
Experience working with research impact assessment, including bibliometric services in a relevant library and/or information center.
Demonstrated experience with different bibliometric data sources with citation tracking capabilities.
Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis methods related to bibliometrics, including data management, manipulation, interpretation, and analysis.
Experience extracting and analyzing bibliometric data in support of strategic requests from Library leadership, including strategic planning, ranking activity, and other research impact reporting.
Proven experience supporting faculty and researchers in optimizing their research visibility.
Strong ability to explore and answer methodological questions related to indicators of research impact in a variety of disciplinary contexts.
Expertise in responsible research evaluation via bibliometric data; conversant with issues related to the quantification of research impact.
Proven success in prioritizing, evaluating, negotiating, and managing requests for bibliometric data and support.
Experience in providing training to faculty, students, and staff on research impact, bibliometrics and alternative metrics.
Proven expertise consulting on best practices in working with bibliometric data and alternative metrics.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and practices and attitudes that advance these University and community values, and an understanding of how these values relate to research impact and citational justice.
Candidates possessing the following will be preferred:
Strong written and verbal skills for teaching and report writing.
Experience teaching information literacy and serving as a liaison to an academic department.
Experience analyzing large datasets.
Relevant academic research experiences and/or publications and/or conference presentations.
Excellent understanding of scholarly communication, including open access publishing, research data management and persistent identifiers.

Additional Information About the Position
Employment Type: Full-Time Career Employee (FTCE)
Salary: In accordance with Article 16.4 of the Collective Agreement, the salary minima are $76,297.75 for Librarian I and $85,125.61 for Librarian II. Salary will commensurate with experience and will increase annually by: i) an Across-the-Board increase and ii) one Career Development Increment (CDI) up to the maximum for satisfactory service and conditional upon receipt of the member’s annual report.
Benefits: Extended health, vision, dental, insurance, tuition waiver benefits and access to the Toronto Metropolitan University Retirement Pension Plan. Five weeks vacation per completed year of service. Sixteen professional development days per year.
