Job Summary

Life of Pi is a 5-time Olivier Award-winning play setting off on a four-month tour across mainland China, Macau & Taiwan. The role includes supporting the International Tour Director, Global Associate Puppetry and Movement Director during rehearsals and maintaining the Production once open.

Life of Pi is a 5-time Olivier Award-winning play setting off on a four-month tour across mainland China, Macau & Taiwan. The production has just come to the end of its first experience of international touring by travelling to Toronto, Abu Dhabi & Mumbai. The production has been praised for its on-stage diversity, skilled puppetry work and complex use of Video and Automation. The play tells the story of a teenager marooned on a lifeboat with a variety of animals (including a Bengal tiger). It is adapted from Yann Martel’s celebrated novel by Lolita Chakrabarti, with direction by Max Webster, Set and Costume Design by Tim Hatley and Puppet and Movement Direction by Finn Caldwell.

Purpose of Job:

To provide to the Producer all services customarily rendered by a Resident Director of a production of this scale, including but not limited to supporting the International Tour Director and Global Associate Puppetry and Movement Director during rehearsals, leading rehearsals as directed, maintaining covers and maintaining the Production once open through show watches, note sessions and understudy rehearsals. Flights, transfers, travel, accommodation and per diems will be provided on the same basis as the touring company.

Job Requirements

  • Rehearse and maintain the direction of the Production in collaboration with the International Tour Director by attending all rehearsals in London and travelling as a member of the touring company through mainland China, Macau and Taiwan.
  • Rehearse covers in line with the production schedule and attend all cover dress rehearsal runs as required by the Producer. Schedule and lead ongoing rehearsals as required.
  • To be an active leader amongst the company.
  • Work closely with the Resident Puppetry & Movement Director on weekly puppetry rotations and knock-ons.
  • Contribute to scheduling conversations with the Production Management, Stage Management and General Management team.
  • Act as the first point of contact with the Resident Puppetry & Movement Director and Company Manager when company members are absent from the production and leading on plans for cover/cut performances.
  • Co-lead with the Resident Puppetry & Movement Director on put ins at each venue.
  • Meeting attendance as required
