Operating in Jakarta, RWI is launching the CHANGE-SEA project, funded by the U.S. Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL). This two-year initiative focuses on safeguarding civic space and promoting environmental human rights in Southeast Asia.

About the Position
The initial contract will be until 31 December 2025, with a possible extension. The offered contract will be under Indonesian labour law conditions and based on RWI terms and conditions for national staff.

The Communication Officer’s primary role is to create and disseminate project-related content, manage social media accounts, coordinate with media outlets, and develop communication strategies to enhance the project’s visibility. The Communication Officer will also lead coordination with identified media partners.

CHANGE SEA: Enhancing Collaboration between Civil Society Actors, Environmental Defenders, and the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) is a new two-year project funded by the US DRL. The project aims to safeguard civic space and promote human rights related to the environment in Southeast Asia.

The Communication Officer will play a key role in crafting and implementing communication strategies, creating project-related content, managing media outreach, and enhancing the visibility of the CHANGE-SEA project across platforms. The position requires close collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working with media and public relations, especially in Indonesia;
  • Writing press releases, articles, and other content in English;
  • Supervising the implementation of the Institute’s graphic profile and working closely with staff
    at both HQ and Offices as well as cross-functionally with Departments to ensure that
    communications, as well as the RWI brand, are presented professionally and consistently
    across various types of media;
  • Contributing to the maintenance and development of the Institute’s website and Intranet,
    including posting information, editing standard content and templates, and improving layout
    and structure.
  • Designing the layout as well as contributing in general to the production of reports, brochures,
    newsletters, articles, press releases, feature stories, video material, and other information and
    communication materials for a variety of media, including digital, web and print;
  • Producing print-ready documents for publication by formatting documents in desktop
    publishing layout;
  • Assisting with marketing and documenting, including photographs, in relation to RWI events
    and interviews.
    RWI’s Indonesia Office Communication Officer-Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for overseeing and delivering the communications-related components of the
    CHANGE-SEA project.
  • Responsible for professionally representing RWI’s interests and communications objectives
    within media networks and dissemination avenues.
  • Responsible for helping design and deliver a clear communications campaign for the CHANGE-
    SEA project, in coordination with the Programme Officer/Country Director, MEAL officer and
    HQ resources.
  • Responsible for the production and layout design of reports, brochures, newsletters, articles,
    press releases, feature stories, video material, and other information and communication
    materials for a variety of media, including digital, web, and print.
  • Responsible for contributing to ongoing/annual reporting on the project through monitoring
    and evaluating the communications components.
  • Responsible for posting information on the Institute’s website, Intranet, and social media
    platforms, in close coordination with the Communication Department in Lund, Sweden,
    headquarters.
  • Actively engage and contribute to a team learning environment, through the regular sharing
    of his/her areas of responsibility, research, or the challenges faced.

Qualifications
Essential Criterion

  • A relevant university degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in communications, media relations, or public
    relations, ideally with a focus on human rights, environmental issues, or non-governmental
    organizations.
  • Experience in developing communication strategies, handling media relations, managing
    campaigns, and producing content across digital and traditional platforms.
  • Proven ability to work with media outlets, draft press releases, and manage communication
    campaigns.
  • Strong writing skills in English, with the ability to produce articles, reports, newsletters, and
    other communication materials.
  • Proficiency in using social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) for project
    visibility and engagement, along with experience in website management and digital content
    posting.
  • Experience with graphic design and layout for reports, brochures, newsletters, and other
    materials.
  • Familiarity with the human rights and environmental landscape in Southeast Asia, particularly
    related to civic space, environmental defenders, and ASEAN human rights mechanisms.
  • Understanding of communication strategies for promoting human rights-related projects,
    particularly in sensitive or politically complex contexts.
  • Awareness of the media landscape in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, with knowledge of local
    and international media outlets.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.
  • Creative, with the ability to think strategically about communications and how to amplify the
    project’s impact.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset and the ability to work with diverse
    teams and stakeholders.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and detail oriented.

Desired

  • Familiarity with ASEAN human rights mechanisms, particularly the ASEAN Intergovernmental
    Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).
  • Experience in managing a US-funded project.
