This is a Continuing Position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Ability to:

  • Collaborate in the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of the District’s 6-12 Supportive Mainstream & Content-based English language development models
  • Establish effective working relationships and work collaboratively with other staff members
  • Co-teach, co-plan and co-assess ML students with Classroom Teachers and/or provide direct instruction to Multilingual Learners within a supportive mainstream language model
  • Ability to collaborate co-plan, co-teach and co-assess with general education teachers to integrate content, literacy and language learning objectives
  • Provide direct content-based English language instruction to identified Multilingual Learners, including newcomer students, to improve academic achievement in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as cultural orientation
  • Understand the core purpose of the EL program and research behind the program’s effectiveness; is familiar with or willing to acquire knowledge of EL educational models and curriculum. 
  • Use Core State Standards and WIDA English language Standards to co- plan, co-teach and co-assess language & content, and shelter instruction using research-based practices.
  • Clearly communicate unit/lesson & language objectives and content
  • Monitor & evaluate each student’s performance and growth in language, core-subject knowledge and understanding utilizing district curricular & formative assessments to inform instruction, identify student instructional needs and prepare progress reports
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to enhance lesson plans and select appropriate educational materials and activities that help Multilingual Learners meet curriculum objectives aligned with district curriculum and state standard outcomes
  • Coordinate and/or consult as needed in regards to “best practices” to support English Language Development (ELD) for general education teacher(s)
  • Communicate the needs of identified Multilingual Learners to general education teacher(s) to ensure student success
  • Assist with school orientation for newcomers and their families; and communicate with Multilingual Learner parents utilizing interpretation and translation services as needed
  • Consult and communicate with teachers, administration, and support staff and attend meetings such as district, building, grade level, department, curriculum, child study team, open house, parent-teacher conferences, and IEP meetings Specific Assessments for Identified Multilingual Learners 
  • Coordinate and administer state testing for identified Multilingual Learners and complete required paperwork Resource and Consultation with Classroom Teachers

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement(s)
  • Valid WA EL Endorsement
  • Experience and skilled in Adult learning disciplines
  • Current or recent experience as an English Language Development Teacher (ELD) and/or ELD co-teacher delivering language & content standards-based lessons
  • Possess high quality instructional practices in all aspects of instructing Multilingual Learners (ML)
  • Knowledgeable & skilled in co-teaching for English Learners and willing to receive coaching and training
  • Proficient in technology use (e.g. Google, Canvas etc.) and willingness
  • Familiarity with sheltered techniques & strategies, WIDA or EL State Standards
  • Multicultural Educator with cultural competency and ability to work comfortably in a diverse community
  • Successfully complete Washington State Patrol background check. Employee is responsible for the cost of the background check.
  • Must have regular, consistent attendance.
  • Must be willing to uphold District Policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Experience working with economically diverse or challenged populations is preferred.
