We are looking to hire a Senior Policy Analyst for a two-year term. The Senior Policy Analyst is member of the Policy and Planning group and is responsible for providing research, analysis, advice and recommendations on key issues and policies affecting the Law Society’s regulatory responsibilities and operations. This includes policy research, analysis, recommendations and proposals on policies relating to the Law Society’s mandate, as well as drafting briefing notes, policy papers and other reports to support Law Society objectives and decision making by the CEO/ED, senior staff, committees and the board.

The duties of this position include:

  • Developing policy frameworks for the translation of the Law Society’s strategic priorities or other issues required by the Law Society’s mandate into viable policy and program changes.
  • Conducting issues management by identifying emerging policy issues of major significance to the Law Society, preparing recommendations that reflect the Law Society strategic priorities, mandate and overall policy and advising the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director (CEO/ED), committees and the board.
  • Analyzing and identifying social, economic and legal issues associated with Law Society objectives, assessing competing and/or conflicting priorities, analyzing data, identifying risks and issues, identifying viable options to address the issues identified and recommending strategic policy alternatives or significant changes to Law Society regulation and programs.
  • Identifying and evaluating similar regulatory frameworks and programs in other jurisdictions or professions and recommending any appropriate changes to the Law Society’s regulation and programs.
  • Preparing regulatory impact assessments for recommended policy proposals.
  • Providing advice and recommendations on regulations, policy and programs to the CEO/ED, senior management, committees and the board.
  • Preparing submissions to government or other external bodies that reflect Law Society policy positions.
  • Liaising with government, the public or professional bodies may be required to effect analysis or development of policy recommendations.
  • Other duties as the Director, Policy & Planning may assign.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in public administration, law, social sciences, or a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years recent related experience in providing policy analysis and working in a policy environment providing independent research, analysis and advice on complex issues, including evaluation of options and recommendations.
  • Knowledge of processes relating to the development of regulation and policy in the public interest in a professional regulatory organization.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate concisely on complex issues and options.
  • Ability to work co-operatively within diverse teams, work groups and across an organization to achieve group and organizational goals and to engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds with diverse views.
