The Team

The Program Advocacy and Communications team works in partnership with program teams and other teams in Global Policy and Advocacy (GPA) to achieve their policy and finance goals by:

• Developing and coordinating the execution of advocacy and communications strategies.
• Using leadership and foundation voice to implement communications and advocacy strategies.
• Developing and managing a grant portfolio dedicated to achieving communications and advocacy outcomes.
• Directly advocating with sector leaders, influencers, media and government officials in order to achieve communications and advocacy outcomes.
• Leading issue-specific communications in service of communications and advocacy goals.
• Developing policy recommendations or proposals in partnership with programmatic and regional offices.

Your Role

The Senior Program Officer (SPO) for Women and children’s health Advocacy Communications will lead the foundation’s communications for family planning (FP), maternal, newborn, child health (MNCH), and women’s health innovations (WHI), Primary Health Care (PHC) managing strategic communications on a diverse range of areas. You will work as part of Health Communications team that includes HIV, TB, Malaria, NTDs, Global Health Innovation, Polio and Immunization and with a broader communications team focused on Gender Equity, Digital Public Infrastructure, Climate, Agriculture and Nutrition.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the development and implementation of multiple advocacy communications strategies (FP, MNCH, WHI and PHC) that set the conditions for greater attention, resources, and policy changes vital to achieve the foundation’s advocacy and programmatic objectives.
  • Manage a diverse and inclusive global portfolio of grants and contracts to advance the communications and advocacy outcomes in support of program strategies, including reviewing letters of inquiry and grant proposals and provide clear, concise, and insightful written analyses and recommendations for funding.
  • Ensure alignment among grantees and partners on key communications themes, messages and objectives.
  • Identify cross-cutting opportunities to elevate the salience of health financing among decision makers in donor and low- and middle-income countries.
  • Advise colleagues on appropriate communications activities, goals and objectives to include in advocacy grants.
  • Support the foundation’s efforts to identify communications risks and develop strategies, in coordination with grantees and partners, to mitigate those risks
  • Oversee agency and consultant support to help implement advocacy, communications, and champion building objectives.
  • Oversee the development (with agency support) of a broad array of evidence-based materials (including messages, fact sheets, press releases, FAQ documents, data visualizations, and other creative writing materials) that communicate the foundation’s key policy advocacy priorities to key opinion leaders, decision-makers, and the media.
  • Represent the foundation to external constituencies. This includes both formal and informal presentations such as making speeches, attending conferences, and other meetings as vital.
  • Partner with Central Communications, Offices of the Presidents, and regional offices to clarify roles and responsibilities as it relates to communications activities outlined in the developed strategies.
  • Track and measure progress against goals and objectives.

Your Experience

  • Extensive strategic communications experience, leading the conception, design and management of communications strategies, campaigns, creative content management, excellent writing and editing skills, and a demonstrated capacity to translate sophisticated health and development issues into compelling persuasive writing.
  • Advanced degree with senior experience in communications and advocacy, or equivalent experience
  • Comprehensive experience working in either the public or non-profit sectors, and comprehensive experience linking communications with advocacy work
  • Experience in leading and/or working in crafting and implementing advocacy communications portfolios related to any/all of these areas, namely, women’s health, MNCNH, FP/SRHR and PHC
  • Knowledge of global health and development issues as well as a deep dedication to the sector; ability to learn new concepts quickly and communicate effectively with different audiences.
  • Knowledge of working with diverse partners, platforms and coalitions related to women’s health and PHC areas is an added plus
  • Prior experience of working in low and middle-income country settings is desirable
  • Demonstrated understanding of the role of advocacy and communications efforts to increase awareness and build political/financial support for health and development goals in the developing world with governmental and non-state organizations.

  • Shown ability to lead and influence others in a constructive manner and to build and sustain collaborative relationships; ability to present publicly in meetings, defend different strategies or approaches and keep various parties abreast of both the work in play and the ultimate results/impact.
  • High standards of personal integrity, and comfort in a wide range of cultural, geographic, and operational situations, demonstrating culturally sensitive behavior with a diverse range of people.

Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.

Advertisement

The salary range for this role is $166,300 to $249,500 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences where our offices are located, in Seattle, WA & Washington D.C. The range for this role in these locations is $181,200 to $271,800 USD. As a mission-driven organization, we strive to balance competitive pay with our mission and new hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint. Actual placement in the range will depend on a candidate’s job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process.
