Signalling complexes and cell wall changes during plant reproduction

We are looking for a student interested in plant developmental, molecular and cell biology to join a vibrant and supportive group of researchers (jointly headed by Lisa Smith, Sam Amsbury and Andrew Fleming), providing an excellent collaborative environment for your PhD at the University of Sheffield.

During fertilisation in plants, key cells (pollen and ovules) undergo remarkable changes including alterations in the cell wall to allow fusion of gametes. This complex cellular dance is essential for most land plants and is central to seed formation in our major crops. Communication between these male and female cells is vital to control fertilisation. However, remarkably little is known about the signalling processes and dynamic molecular changes that occur to allow the correct dance moves at the right time. This project will provide fundamental new understanding of plant reproduction.

You will use biochemistry, cell biology and microscopy techniques to understand the how the cells convey signals from one another and how the cell wall composition of pollen and ovules changes during fertilisation. You will use molecular genetics to alter the signalling machinery and test whether this alters composition of the cell walls and the fertilisation process. The project combines our expertise in plant reproduction (Galindo-Trigo et al., EMBO Reports 21: e48466) and cell wall structure/function (Carroll et al., Current Biology 2022), building on a BBSRC-funded project with European collaborators where we are examining signalling between cells during fertilisation.

Funding: A tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate (£19,237 for 2024/25 entry), research costs and tuition fees at UK rate

How we allocate:

Shortlisting will take place as soon as possible after the closing date and successful applicants will be notified promptly. If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited for an interview on a date to be confirmed in February 2025. You’ll be notified as soon as possible after the interview dates whether your application has been successful, placed on a reserve list or unsuccessful. If you are successful, you’ll be required to confirm your intention to accept the studentship within 10 days.

Terms and conditions:

The studentships are fully funded for four years, and you must complete your PhD in four years.

You’ll receive the UKRI minimum doctoral stipend per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments. The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) stipend is tax free and does not need to be paid back.

International students will need to have sufficient funds to cover the costs of their student visa, NHS health surcharge, travel insurance and travel to the UK as these are excluded from UKRI funding.
