Job Summary
Job Description
Volcano is looking to commission five performers to make individual short performances (around 30 minutes) at our Swansea High Street venue in April and May. This is the fourth year of this freelance commission series, which began in 2022 as Solo Duets for the Future. The idea behind this initiative is to encourage performers to develop new performance modes in front of small, enthusiastic audiences.
The commissions are each for a fortnight period in April, May, or early June. You may select your available dates in the application form. Working hours are self-managed during development, based on a 37.5 hour week. Four public performances towards the end of the. second week.
Artist Fee: £1500. Accommodation and return travel expenses provided.
Your performance must use The Room.
The Room will be an unadorned set built onstage, with four walls and various windows. It will measure approximately 4m x 4m. It will have access at several different points. It can be adapted to your performance idea, using set dressing, painting, lighting choices, and various audience configurations. You will have a menu of objects and furnishings to choose from.
We’ll be looking for five pieces that use the set in different and imaginative ways. The performance can be about anything you wish, but (as in previous seasons) we will be looking for work that looks outward rather than in, that communicates with audiences, and that points to the future rather than dissecting the past.
Please read the FAQs in the callout before applying! When you’re ready, please submit your ideahttps://cutt.ly/shape25_theroom – via the application form. If you have a question that isn’t answered in the FAQs, please drop us a line with your queries.
Job Requirements
The commissions are open to emerging and experienced performers, and are selected on the basis of the idea submitted and of evidence that the candidate has the ability to deliver.
Performances can include English and/or Welsh, be bilingual or multilingual, or non-linguistic. We especially welcome proposals to work in Welsh, which have been under-represented to date.
You may apply again this year if you have been unsuccessful in a previous round, but please note that we would prefer to see a new idea, or at least significant change or development since that time.
Artists who received a commission under Solo Duets for the Future in 2022 or The Shape of Things to Come in 2023 or 2024 are not eligible.
Balanced with access criteria, we will prioritise work that is likely to be enjoyed by a diverse or casual urban audience without specialist knowledge.
We might be flexible about one or more of these criteria to accommodate an otherwise outstanding proposal.
