JOB TITLE: Teacher, Special Education Exempt: Yes Department: Non-Public School (NPS) – School Year 225 days. Reports to: Director Education SUMMARY: The Teacher, under the direction of the Director of Education, designs, develops, documents and delivers appropriate programs of individualized instruction to students within the school setting. In addition to providing effective instruction, the teacher is involved in all related activities that establish and reinforce acceptable student behavior, progress, attitudes, and social skills where success is the major objective (including , but not limited to, coordinating and providing therapeutic special education services which models New Haven’s core values and program standards). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Develop and deliver effective, individualized instruction using a combination of direct, computer-assisted, and small group techniques – assisting students to experience success and achieve skills/knowledge. • Demonstrate, oversee, and employ effective classroom management practices to insure that the environment is both conducive to learning and safe, reporting special incidents and utilizing appropriate ProAct and agency practices (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc. in adherence to New Haven School policies and in compliance with state/district Education Codes). • Implement, interface, participate and support New Haven treatment programs and meetings, interacting positively with youth as recommended through program counseling techniques and instruction. • Document teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes. Prepare teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress. • Case Manage IEP’s, including ITP’s of all assigned students (12 per classroom). Confer frequently, in conjunction with the IEP process, with professional staff and parents regarding each student’s progress and assist the parents in establishing realistic goals for their child with concrete suggestions for implementation. • Directs assistants (Child Care Counselors – Special Emphasis), volunteers and/or 1:1 aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students. • Assists with other duties as assigned and/or needed, including working with other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Hold or eligible for an Education Specialist Instruction Credential with authorization to teach students with mild/moderate disabilities. Must also have or be working toward CLAD Certification. Prior teaching experience with adolescents in a similar setting desired. Ability to engage, motivate, and manage behavioral treatment/educational plans. Ability to write and communicate clearly and professionally. Ability to work independently and as a team member as well as represent organization internally and externally. Basic computer skills (word processing, Word, Excel etc.). Hold or eligible for an CA Education Specialist Instruction Credential with authorization to teach students with mild/moderate disabilities. 2. Must possess a valid California driver’s license. 3. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance and DOJ Clearance through Community Care Licensing. 4. Must be able to successfully complete the following training within the first thirty days of employment. • ProAct (Professional Assault Response Training) • Basic First Aid/CPR/Bloodborne Pathogens Training SKILLS: • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write professional correspondence. • Ability to deliver stand up presentations to groups, present information one-on-one and in small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization, and to receive and deliver reports/information to support personal. Present lessons in a variety of instructional deliveries. Pre- and post- plan. • Ability to plan and prepare lessons, possessing sufficient verbal skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance. Must be able to read, understand and deliver age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, and education code. Utilize a variety of classroom discipline strategies. Adhere to curricula objectives. Participate in curriculum development. Develop and maintain open channels of communication between home and school. • Ability to do complex math processes and interpret data necessary to teach and evaluate student performance and prepare and report outcomes and evaluate academic progress. Keep records that meet the needs of students, school, and District. • Ability to demonstrate and utilize computer technology/literacy. • Ability to understand content. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a multiple concrete variables in standardized situations such as the following:. • Maintain a climate conducive to student learning and create an appropriate physical environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is must be able to do the following: • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods • Ability to work at a desk and in meetings of various configurations. • Ability to read printed matter and computer screens. • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation. • Ability to understand speech at normal levels. • Ability to bend, twist, stoop and reach. • Ability to push, pull, and transport instructional materials up to 25 pounds. • Ability to drive a personal vehicle to conduct business. The employee, in conjunction with their team (partner or up to 3 additional employees) must have 100% height and weight advantage over any resident in which they may potentially need to restrain. They occasionally may move more than 100 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. OSHA CATEGORY: This position performs tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, and employment may require performing unplanned procedures.
