POSITION GOAL

To provide leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of programs for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in Broward County Public Schools as well as students with disabilities attending charter schools.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Specialist, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) & ESLS for Charter Schools shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below.

  • Assist the Curriculum Supervisor by planning, coordinating, and directing staff activities related to the areas of Deaf or Hard of Hearing and students with disabilities attending charter schools in adherence to all federal, state and local regulations.
  • Assist the Curriculum Supervisor with direct supervision of the work of teachers and clerical staff.
  • Assist the Curriculum Supervisor in the development, coordination, and implementation of Exceptional Student Learning Support policies and procedures to ensure efficient program operations.
  • Assist the Curriculum Supervisor in the coordination and implementation of state and federal laws, rules, policies and procedures to ensure efficient program operations particularly as they pertain to students who are deaf or hard of hearing and students with disabilities attending charter schools.
  • Assist the Curriculum Supervisor by developing, implementing and monitoring equipment inventory for students with disabilities.
  • Assist the Curriculum Supervisor by developing and maintaining a progress monitoring system for services provided to students who are deaf or hard of hearing and students with disabilities attending charter schools.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Academics, Office of School Performance and Accountability, and all other pertinent areas to ensure curriculum content validity, quality, and consistency with District philosophy and objectives.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of staff/parent development training opportunities in coordination with the professional development department.
  • Assist Curriculum Supervisor in ensuring proper implementation of curriculum design for each student.
  • Assist Curriculum Supervisor in identification of research based educational materials to be utilized by staff.
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal and state, as well as School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • An earned master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience with students with disabilities.
  • Valid Florida Professional Educator Certification or eligible for Certification in the following discipline(s): Exceptional Student Education, Deaf or Hard of Hearing or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design, implementation and evaluation of curriculum. Specialist, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) & ESLS for Charter Schools (cont.) SBBC: EE-150 2
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Valid Florida Educational Leadership Certification in a related program area.
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Fluent in sign language.
  • Bilingual skills.

SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose

Frequently works with Exceptional Student Learning Support leadership and all levels of District staff, including the Office of General Counsel, school-based personnel, district advisory boards, the community, outside agencies/vendors, students and families to collaborate, support and implement initiatives, programs, and services for students with disabilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
