Today, delivery of those legal services requires innovation and partnership. Bet Tzedek’s Harbor-UCLA Medical Legal Partnership embodies this reality. With legal staff co-located at the medical center, Bet Tzedek collaborates with medical professionals to holistically address community members’ social determinants of health through legal advocacy. Bet Tzedek seeks a full-time staff attorney to join this dynamic and innovative team.This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services’ hybrid/remote workplace designation, however, the employee will be required to regularly work at the Harbor-UCLA Hospital, complete home visits, and work in the office or other locations to meet workload/business obligations.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Work with medical center staff to identify and refer patients with legal assistance needs to Bet Tzedek.
  • Provide patients/clients from diverse backgrounds with culturally competent, person-centered, trauma-informed legal intake and services on-site at the medical center.
  • Provide advice and counsel, limited service, and full scope representation on behalf of DHS/DMH patients referred to Bet Tzedek from the medical center on a range of basic poverty law areas including but not limited to housing access, public benefits (e.g., SSI/CAPI, Medi-Cal, IHSS, CalFresh, etc.), consumer debt, employment rights, expungements, advance planning (e.g., advance health care directives, financial powers of attorney, etc.), probate court matters (e.g., conservatorship and guardianship), and immigration.
  • Clearly and professionally communicate with clients, legal partners, hospital personnel, courts, agencies, and the public.
  • Develop, lead, and/or promote education programs for medical center staff, County employees, and community members.
  • Participate in medical legal partnership clinics, home-visits and other client service or community outreach events.
  • Help train, mentor, and place matters with pro bono attorneys.
  • Work closely with Director of Pro Bono Programs to recruit, train, and supervise law students and lawyers to join as in-house volunteers.
  • Work closely with the Directing Attorney to track client data and report on outcomes.

Salary:$82, 221.99 – $102,231.38 (DOE/DOQ)

  • Active member of the California State Bar in good standing (required).
  • Minimum three years full-time practice of law (required).
  • Willingness to train and work with volunteer attorneys and students (required).
  • Access to reliable transportation (required).
  • Ability to work effectively with hospital personnel, staff, volunteers, students, attorneys, and community members (required).
  • Intermediate/Advanced Spanish-language proficiency, including oral interpretation and written translation (preferred).
  • Minimum two years non-profit legal services experience, or equivalent experience in housing law, public benefits, consumer debt, employment rights, expungements, advance planning, family law, or immigration law (preferred).
  • Maintain case files in a manner that meets relevant policies, procedures, and requirements (required).
  • Self-motivated, takes initiative, ability to learn quickly (required).
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time, and meet deadlines in a high-volume caseload environment (required).
