Overview:

This position is for a staff pharmacist with the specialty pharmacy team. Staff pharmacists work in the call center completing clinical outreach to patients/caregivers and pharmacist-specific duties to support specialty pharmacy operations. It is Monday-Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 PM with no holiday/weekend requirements. Additionally, it’s a hybrid position with one day onsite/week after 90-day training period.

Job Description Summary:

Verifies inpatient prescriber orders, dispenses ordered medications, compounding IVs, and sterile products, delivers timely preparation and distribution of patient orders, provides drug information and clinical patient review for safety and accuracy, and supervises technicians and interns. Provides support on patient codes and emergency room level I traumas. Demonstrates competencies defined in Inpatient Staff Pharmacist duties and responsibilities in providing age-appropriate care to patients from the age of birth through 21 years and select adult patients.

The Specialty Pharmacy Staff Pharmacist position is responsible for seeing that the specialty prescription needs of Nationwide Children’s patients are fulfilled. The position supports the pharmacy by providing assistance to the specialty and outpatient pharmacy staff. While the Specialty Pharmacy Staff Pharmacist may be required to step into the pharmacy and fill prescriptions at times, this is primarily a call center-based role.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees Specialty Pharmacy Technicians in the performance of prescription data entry, prior authorization submissions, preparation of prescriptions, and adherence to delivery schedules. Assigns tasks, checks work, (i.e. compounds) and provides input in performance evaluations. (Continuously)
  • Supports the Specialty Pharmacy Advanced Patient Care Pharmacists (APCP) by managing distributive functions of the specialty pharmacy while APCP is in clinic; works through billing issues escalated by the technician. (Frequently)
  • Routinely interacts with patients via telephonic visits for management and monitoring of their Specialty therapies. (Continuously)
  • Obtains billing information confirms the patient’s ability to pay or refers patient to appropriate agency, records filling and billing information according to established procedures. (Frequently)
  • Prepares outpatient prescriptions determines appropriateness of dosage form for the size and weight of the child, contacts physician if in doubt of appropriateness of dosage. May on occasion need to fill a prescription from a study and perform the required record keeping. (Occasionally)

Education Requirement:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (preferred) or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy.

Licensure Requirement:

  • Licensure, or licensure-eligibility, to practice pharmacy in the state of Ohio
