Boston Public Schools seeks Elementary/ESL Teachers to join the after school program at the Melnea Cass shelter. This is an opportunity for teachers to serve our newest students in a time of need. The elementary students in the shelter currently have a play area but there is a need for more structured activities that will help them attain language skills. This program has been created to provide an academic space for students to have fun learning more English. This will also be a space for students to build relationships with caring adults who also speak their native language. 

Reports to: BPS Division of Student Support 

PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

The program will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. This will be a 8 week program starting April 1st, 2024 to May 31, 2024. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend orientation/training.
  • Prepare and facilitate the following for elementary students:
  • Community meetings/circles
  • ESL lessons
  • Hands on activities 
  • Progress monitor students english proficiency through observations.
  • Meet with program director for bi-weekly check-ins

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Massachusetts Educator Licensure in English as a Second Language.
  • Experience in ESL instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the Core Competencies of Effective Teaching established by the Boston Public Schools as outlined above.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
  • Proficient in speaking Spanish or Haitian Creole 
  • Current teacher in the Boston Public Schools.

TERMS: BTU contractual hourly rate.

  • Anticipated total of 50 hours, which includes 32 hours on-site and up to 18 hours for planning and prep including set up activities, professional development, and additional duties.
