This recruitment will be used to fill multiple Student Technical Assistant positions in the Endophyte Service Laboratory (ESL) (https://emt.oregonstate.edu/endophyte-lab) starting at part-time from date of hire (winter or spring term) until June 27 (10-24 hours per week) for training and onboarding, then moving to 30-40 hours per week during mid-summer (July 7-August 29). (The lab will be closed the week of June 30; students will not be able to work during this time). 30-40 hours per week of work after July 7th is expected but will be dependent upon sample volume in the laboratory as this is a seasonal position; thus, full-time work (40 hours per week) is not guaranteed. 

The ESL is located within the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology (EMT) at Oregon State University (OSU). Only students that anticipate being able to work during summer 2025 should apply. Personnel will perform routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of service work for the Endophyte Service Laboratory which may include laboratory chemical extractions, data collection, interpretive analysis and/or general lab upkeep.

Position Duties

Position Duties

Student will perform routine laboratory duties under an established quality assurance system for the Endophyte Service Laboratory.

50% – Carrying out solvent extraction assays in plant/feed materials for assessment of mycotoxin quantitation by HPLC fluorescence following standard operating procedures

20% – Lab maintenance (e.g. washing dishes, stocking consumables, and prepping solutions), sample storage and organization and other related work

15% – Processing/summary of data

10% – Grinding of plant samples

5% – Log-in of samples

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
• High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
• Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
• Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
• Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
• Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
• International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

Must be able to work well with others as part of an integrated team and have attention to detail.

Responsible and well organized with good time management and communication skills; during the summer months, sample processing occurs in a high-throughput environment.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Experience or classes in chemistry, biology, agricultural sciences, toxicology and related fields is preferred, but not required.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Strong preference for students able to work up to 40 hours per week during summer term.
