The elementary school Pathways to Progress summer school program supports newcomer English learners in grades K through 5 who are identified as at-risk in reading and math on district assessments. Instruction will focus on oral language, vocabulary, literacy, and math instruction. Pathways to Progress follows a co-teaching model of instruction in which teaching pairs plan and instruct together. Additionally, bilingual English-Spanish teachers will provide Spanish literacy intervention and Spanish language support in math on a push-in basis to support Spanish-speaking students in bridging to English. Bilingual English-Spanish teachers with experience providing literacy or math instruction in Spanish are encouraged to apply.
- Participate in professional learning activities before the Summer School session begins
- Provide Spanish language literacy intervention or native language support in math
- Support students in making cross-linguistic connections to bridge between Spanish and English
- Accommodate, scaffold, and differentiate instruction to meet learners’ needs
- Facilitate student interaction and engagement during instruction to increase language development
- Plan and deliver instruction in collaboration with teacher teams
- Communicate effectively with families and other staff regarding the Summer School curriculum and instructional strategies that support English learners participating in Summer School
- Experience teaching elementary school students from diverse backgrounds
- Experience providing literacy or math instruction in Spanish
- Experience teaching in a bilingual English-Spanish setting
- Experience integrating language development and core-content instruction in literary or math
- Experience providing flexible small-group instruction
Preferred Qualifications:
- Virginia-licensed teacher
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Knowledge of best practices for fostering second language acquisition
- Knowledge of best practices for bridging emerging bilingual students from Spanish to English
- Knowledge of best practices for providing literacy or math instruction
- Available to participate in professional learning activities
- Available to attend professional development on July 1-3, 2025
- Willing to work as part of a collaborative instructional team
- Ability to work with flexible student groupings
