VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists is expanding its Surgery Service and is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join the surgery team!
Our Surgery Service:
VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists Surgery Service comprises of board-certified surgeons, Certified Veterinary Technicians, and Veterinary Assistants. Our board-certified surgeons perform intricate surgeries in the chest or abdomen, complex fractures, repair torn ligaments, remove cancerous growths, manage extensive non-healing wounds, reconstructive and neurologic surgeries.
Duties of our Veterinary Assistant will include, but are not limited to:
SURGERY
- Monitor surgery schedule to ensure all necessary equipment will be available to the surgeon at the correct time
- Prepare OR for surgery; select appropriate packs, instruments, and materials for the procedure being performed
- Take patients to and from surgery as requested
- Perform as surgical runner in the OR as requested
- Assist any hospital team as needed
SURGICAL PACKS & STERILIZATION
- Be familiar with the proper way to clean surgical instruments after surgery, to include use of the sterilization equipment
- Be familiar with the proper way to wrap surgical packs, extra instruments, and other materials for sterilization
- Be familiar with the use of the autoclave, gas sterilizer, and ultrasonic cleaner and perform all routine maintenance with communication and support from Facility Manager and Purchaser
- Inform the Purchaser and Facility Manager of any broken or damaged equipment efficiently
- Be certified or available to become certified as an ETO gas sterilizer operator
INVENTORY
- Communicate with Facility Manager and Purchaser proactively and effectively for appropriate inventory needs
- Take routine inventory of stock and add necessary items to the ‘Want List’
- Maintain pack, extra-instrument, and equipment lists
- Restock drawers, shelves, product in prep and surgery suites
- Order necessary hardware per the instruction of the Leadership Team
CLEANING OF SURGERY AND TREATMENT ROOMS
- Surgery suites – clean all surfaces, lights, table, table tray, vacuum and mop floor
- Surgery prep – keep tables clean, pick up of used syringes, hair, and garbage; keep anesthesia and other machines clean to include their wheels; keep counters litter free and clean, clean keyboards and computer terminals; keep food out of the area
- Radiology – pick up after any procedures, keep protective gear hung up and cleaned
MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES
- Learn the veterinary software and assist Specialists and teams with accessing information
- Check to see that all animals have food and water (unless medically withheld), and are clean
- Clean cages and runs during the day as needed
- Attend staff meetings and contribute constructive feedback
Compensation: Pay range is $22-26 / hour. Compensation is negotiable based on education and experience.
Schedule: Full-time opportunity, 4 x 10 hour shifts.

Requirements:
- 1+ years of Veterinary Assistant experience
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds repeatedly throughout the day
- Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly
- Must be able to stand for a long of period of time
- Must be able to work under stressful conditions and work efficiently and effectively under those conditions
- Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations (with training)
