This posting is for one unionized contractual appointment. A Teaching Assistant is a Graduate Student employed to assist the Course Supervisor as a Teaching Assistant in a classroom environment. Teaching Assistant Positions are governed by the Collective Agreement between McGill University and the Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill (AGSEM)

Estimated Number of Positions:

2 Teaching Assistants – (support for all 4 sections)

  • 1 TA must be Bilingual

Total Hours of Work per Term:

70 hours per TA (estimated)

Position Summary:

This requisition is for two positions, at 70 hours each for the term, in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education. Course dates are January 6, 2025 to February 14, 2025. Effective dates of appointment are December 23, 2024 to February 28, 2025.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Marking and Grading
  • Preparing Course Materials
  • Assisting Students’ learning
  • Leading discussions.
  • Project Supervision
  • Provide feedback to students on presentations and/or course work.
  • Attending classes (001 & 002; Mondays & Thursdays. 003 & 004; Tuesdays and Fridays. (001 & 003); 8:35AM to 11:25AM. (002&004); 2:35PM to 5:25PM) – may only need to attend one.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD or Master’s degree related to the course/faculty.
  • One TA must be bilingual (French and English).
  • Both TAs should have an educational background in mathematics or other STEM fields, mathematics education or other STEM education fields, or elementary school (K-6) education.
  • Assets: • Formal or non-formal experience with teaching mathematics at the K-12 levels is an asset. Those who do not have teaching experience in mathematics should have experience and knowledge of mathematics education research or another related field. • Experience in teaching, supporting, or coaching mathematics K-12 teachers is an asset. • Understanding and experience with practice-based pedagogies of teacher education is an asset. • Having completed the course Seminar in Practice-based Teacher Education is an asset.
  • Should have a political and theoretical orientation towards social justice and anti-oppression. 
  • An understanding of contemporary conversations around class, gender, race, sexuality and the intersections these socio-political paradigms have with education is required.
  • DISE and McGill students will have priority.

As per collective agreement 2.11 A teaching assistant is a Graduate student at the Master’s or Doctoral level employed to assist a Course Supervisor as a Teaching Assistant or Demonstrator.
